Freshening up the Sports Tourer

Spent the evening overhauling the Record hubs and the Suntour Winner Pro freewheel on the '73 Sports Tourer. Nothing out of the ordinary - just one of those nights where you're working on a bike and get lost in thoughts of rides you've been on with it. I only got this bike a few months ago but it's probably the first bike I've ever had that I know I will never get rid of. Everything about it - how it fits, how it rides, the build, the look - is in sync with me.

Old Campy grease, still wet, but a bit dirty and not enough of it. Cleaned out and repacked with Park Polylube.

Suntour Winner Pro freewheel overhaul. This is 13-22 corncob. I'll put a bigger freewheel on when the teeth on this one wear out, but this is too nice of a freewheel to just get rid of. Bearings cleaned and repacked.

Everything back on the bike.

Cool bike. Looks like an old friend. My first real touring bike was an old Univega Sport Touring bike remade with lots of upgrades and changes to make it work. The tighter geometry and tubes just fit me just right. I've had many bikes since then but that entry level tourer just became part of me. It's a rare feeling.☺️

Good looking bike. I'm building up an early 70s Fuji Finest sort of along these lines. Those look like cushy tires; what are they?

Nice bike! I bought a Sports Tourer back in 73 to replace my Continental, which I gave to a buddy. Great riding machine, but ultimately replaced the Sports Tourer with an 84 Supersport, which I still have. Gave the Sports Tourer to the same buddy, he sold the Continental not long after I gave it to him, and traded in the Sports Tourer on an Asian Trek. Wish I still had that Sports Tourer, kinda been on the lookout for an early 70s Sports Tourer in yellow, gotta be a 25in model though.
Thanks for posting, Tim

Soma Supple Vitesse (aka Panaracer). 700x38, although these measure closer to 35 on these skinny rims. They are on par with the Compass/Rene Herse tires.

By the way, good for you for sticking with that corncob. WI has some hills; I would have dumped that freewheel especially since the bike rocks a long cage RD. You may have to wait a long time for the teeth to wear out; in my experience, the teeth on new winner freewheels last a long time. I'm getting ready to install a 13-28 new winner freewheel on my Fuji Finest I am building up.

Yes... the original freewheel had a big skip-tooth cog with, effectively, 34 teeth.

Good point. I might just switch it out when I have to replace the chain then.

'cause reasonable sized chainrings in 116bcd are a pain to find. Picked these up from Bicycle Specialties (Mariposa) a few months ago.

Sweet looking ride! What handlebars are those? (I think I see a red stripe indicating nitto heat-treatment). Also, what width?

Rene Herse Randonneur bend bars in 46cm width. Yes they are heat-treated made-by-Nitto bars. I love them. So comfortable.

They definitely look comfy. Is there a corresponding Nitto model number (B135, B132, etc) or are these a custom commission by Rene Herse?

Also love the two-tone bar wrap.

They are custom for Rene Herse. Slightly longer reach and deeper drop and a lot less flare than Nitto B135. And I don't think you can get the B135 or B132 in a 46cm.
