Ok, so at the risk of being ostracized forever from this forum, I'm going to say the truth anyway. Besides when I was a bike messenger and only because of liability issues to my employer, I have never worn a helmet........god thats going to hurt. I feel like someone just threw something at their monitor after reading this .

BUT, being older, and wiser, and having kids and a wife that is like I will buy you any helmet you want as long as you wear it, I am now going to invest in both a MTB helmet and road helmet. Sooo, suggestions? That Giro Ionos seems sold out or unavailable everywhere. The POCs seem a little too pricey, unless someone has a site where its decently priced (like $120 MAX). My wife is cool, but she aint that cool.

Every time I ride outside. I don't wear one in the garage.

It's a Giro Something-Or-Other. Since I can't remember when I bought it, it's probably time to replace it, but everyone and his dog are buying all the new bikes and XL jerseys and bibs and helmets, so I'll probably soldier on till Spring with this one.

How big is your garage that you can ride inside?

That Giro is from 2012(Purchased new in 2018). I'd look at POC Omne. You might find one on sale for around $125.

HA! Maybe I just have amazing bike handling skills, so I can ride really fast in a 16' circle?

(You realize I meant I don't wear a helmet on the trainer, right?)

Helmet (Giro)100% of the time, Hi-viz reflective shirt or vest 99% of the time. Not only for my safety, but to set a good example. I am H&S coordinator at work, I can't afford to be seen arriving on my bike in any other way. I have seven grandchildren who drop by regularly. 5 are on either pedal bikes or kick bikes and their parents are strict about helmets, don't want them to catch Papa without a helmet.

As a former motorcyclist I never understood people not wanting to wear a bike helmet. You barely know they are there. Other than a ride around the cul de sac, I'm wearing a helmet. Most often that is a Smith Session MIPS and sometimes a Giro Synthe MIPS.

If I feel a crash is imminent, I just make sure I stay home that day. No helmet needed.

I occasionally ride bikeshare bikes without a helmet. These are usually situations where I'm already out and about, and end up grabbing a bike to get somewhere, but didn't plan ahead and bring a helmet. If I walk out the door intending to get on a bikeshare bike I'll usually (but not always) bring a helmet with me. If I'm heading out on a road, gravel or MTB ride, I definitely wear one 100% of the time. I currently have a Bell Z20/MIPS.

That said, I have doubts about the effectiveness of bike helmets in general. I mostly wear one to appease others, and because... why not? When I'm on a bikeshare bike and/or commuting, I'm sitting upright on on a heavy bike doing less than 15mph, usually in a bike lane on streets with fairly slow moving traffic. My risk in this situation does not seem to be much higher than if I were walking. When I'm out on my road or MTB, the speeds are higher, the risk taking is higher, and the chances of crashing seem higher.

Helmets work well at protecting from skull fractures, but not as well at preventing brain injuries,

I love my Smith ski helmet, and their Koroyd foam techology seems like good tech and gets good reviews, so I bought a Smith Vantage MIPS bike helmet. It looks good and fit well, but I could tell almost immediately after putting it on my head that it was going to be too warm for me for biking, so I returned it. The Koroyd tech does not permit as much air flow. I wound up getting the relatively obscure Sweet Protection Falconer II. For the most part I like it. The sunglass dock is hard to use, and the sweat pads are so absorbent I have to periodically squeeze them out on hot days, but it's comfortable and has good airflow.

I always wear a helmet when riding -- except sometimes on bikeshares when I don't have it with me.

I worked with a guy who didn't have insurance on his truck. I said, "What are you going to do if you get in an accident?"

He said, "I don't plan to get into an accident."

I see a lot of newb's riding the trail with their helmets hanging on their handlebars. I guess they plan to put them on just before an accident.

I don't get on a bike without a helmet. I have fallen over just standing because I am clumsy. I even wipe on the trainer inside once did not have it locked in place went down, but no I don't wear one inside on the trainer. I would if I have rollers.

This past July, I was riding in the early morning in a bike lane, on the way to a bike trail--maybe 15-16mph. Sunday morning traffic volume is typically very low. Next thing I know, I'm waking up in an ambulance, with no idea what happened. The police report I read later in the hospital stated that I had entered an intersection (with a green light), and a driver coming from the opposite direction attempted a left turn and either didn't see me, or saw me but failed to yield. The car sustained damage to its front bumper and windshield, and I had ended up with 7 fractured ribs, and collarbone broken into 3 pieces. My brain function/memory tests showed that I had suffered minimal brain trauma--yet I was probably unconscious for 5-10 minutes before the ambulance arrived. Checking the helmet revealed a small flat spot near the front, and a crack going through the protective foam.

Even without video evidence of what happened, I have high confidence that wearing the helmet saved my life. I would never bike in the city without a helmet, period.

I don't have any data at hand but I have driven my head into the ground both with and without a helmet. I prefer to have a helmet on when this occurs.

After riding all my life, racing for a few years, and destroying a few helmets, I got my first concussion this winter at age 63, courtesy of a hit and run driver who took me out from behind. After that, I got a Bell Z20. It’s expensive, but it has MIPS, it fits, It’s reasonably well ventilated, it channels sweat well, it doesn’t look too dorky, and it has non-stink pads. I got another one this month after denting it (and various body parts) in perhaps the stupidest accident of my career, but that’s a story for another time.
