Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah, the 0.25 grams rotating weight is a bummer, but I always leave it on.

Ah. I haven't used (or ever seen!) a tool like that, but I do use a beer/wine bottle or similar as a rolling pin after applying the patch. I've always taken the film off, too - sometimes one edge of a patch will threaten to come up with it, but I'll just peel from another angle and it's fine.

I think the patch failure is a conspiracy to get us to go tubeless.

Next thing you know, they will be sabotaging rim brake pads to get us to move over to disc brakes.

Pro tip: if you really want the cellophane off, fold the patch so the cellophane splits in the middle. Removing it from the center rather than the edges seems to work better. That said, I still leave it on these days.

I really need to organize my bike stuff, so I know which tubes are still good. The other day I was putting new tires on those RX100/Trek Sonic wheels I got for the Cannondale and spent entirely too much time carefully getting the tube and tire onto the rim only to find 5 minutes later that the tire was flat as flat can be.

Sometimes I'll throw it in the bench vise, not torquing it much, for a minute if I'm near one while patching.

I have tubeless sealant in some of my tubes. Does that count as half tubeless?

Indeed. There were shops out there that had the reputation... If your car isn't broken, they can fix that.

I have two home made chainwhips. In fact, since I made them in the 80s, they probably have 7speed chain on them. I probably should update them but they seem to work fine.

I have a pair that my dad made. Pretty sure 6-speed was the standard at the time. They still work just fine.

Day started off great - had a casual ride of about 20 miles along the river. Then, as we were heading back to the shop to drop off the bikes, and my wife crashed while almost stopped. I didn't see it, and some guy chased me down to tell me. Fell onto her left elbow, and may have some sort of fracture. 😪

But, I found out how to properly use bottle cages so the day was not a total loss.
