What happens to your trashed tyres?
You just throw them into the bin? I have a lot and I just don't like the idea of throwing them away (for environmental reasons). Is there a way to retread them or use them differently?

I work at a bike shop. We put them in the garbage.
The only reason there's a 'bike tires only' bin next to the recycling bins is because the prop manager got sick of us jamming the compactor. So they get special pickup, same landfill tho.

Maybe you could boot newer tires with pieces from them. If you go long distances, maybe you could even cut them up into multiple boots with varying lengths, then travel with a few boots instead of a whole spare. This is coming from someone who has only ridden about 5,000 miles and has never ridden long distance.

I haul mine down to my local auto tire shop and toss them in the recycling dumpster. They get hauled to the dump and shredded, from there they are either used as landscaping mulch or sold to be added to asphalt.

But where does the contents of the bin go? I was at the local dump a while back and noticed a huge truck full of plastic bales being off loaded. I asked the dump operator, and he said it was overage from one of the local plastic recycling centers. Seems there is only a limited regional market for some types of plastic and once they buy what they want they won't buy anymore. They send the extra to the dump because it is cheaper than trying to store it or haul it further away.

just had an idea for reuse...
shims-
ever install a rear-triangle kickstand and lose the rubber shims? inner tube is too flexy, gets pinched through; how about strips of (slick) tire.
zip tie some to the headtube of a bike, so the brace for the wald handlebar basket doesnt cut a groove there?

I hang them on my walls and use them to decorate my garage. It gonna look pretty cool once I get enough, I suppose at some point I'll take them all down and throw them in the nearest river. Haha jk

I'm all for sensible recycling, but a lot of it isn't, and a fair amount of it is a scam.
IMO, bike tires don't have anything really heinous or significantly valuable in them so I don't sweat trashing them.

Oh I thought that bench looked extremely comfortable since the tires would flex a little bit when you sat down- like a hammock or sling. Just don't plop down on the middle brace! The frame is very pretty. My only concern would be to make sure the tires were absolutely clean, and whether the more aggressive treads might poke you. Those look ok to me though

I leave them where someone can recycle them. The old tires might be too worn for me, but someone else might be interested in a used tire, especially if it's for free.

I reuse tubes as shims, pads and such. As for tires, you could attach to your bike with rope and the next time a dog chases you, "lasso" it with the tire, do a quick 90 or 180 and drag the lil mutt for a distance. Or do what I do, ride up behind your kids and toss it over there head ..."DADDY!...REALLY?!"
