Shimano uses those as a safety device for the caliper mounting bolts. They slip over the head of the bolt and are supposed to prevent the bolt from loosening. I have never used them.

The fit is so light, that I'm struggling too to see how they could prevent a properly torqued bolt from unscrewing.
OTOH, they would work fine for keeping an otherwise loose bolt from simply falling out. Which I suppose is a safety increase in a way.

That said, the safety wire system is superior, in terms of anti-loosening function...but I wouldn't trust the average person to properly wire it...

The protruding tangs are supposed to be rotated anti-clockwise into the frame/brake caliper/adapter, which prevents vibrating loose. It doesn't take much to keep it from happening.

Or to drill the 5mm bolt, or to find a castellated 5mm nut.

If i were to put the clip on the lower bolt, the only thing the tangs could possibly brace against in the event of (CCW) rotation is the Disk Rotor.
and for the top bolt, the tangs would hit the hydraulic line before the caliper body itself.
Neither option seems like a good idea.
Not that I'd use these clips, but really what were they thinking?
