My new 2005 Cervelo Soloist Centaur...... well a few months old.
Kinda a sad story with a happy ending. Two years ago I bought my first road bike, a 2004 Cannondale R800. I was very happy with the bike. Very fast and responsive, comfortable for long 100 mile rides, but still a force in the hills and sprints. Two days before I was moving out from my old roomates place the garage gets broken into and they steal the bike and some of my power tools. I can only imagine some thief trying to ride off on a 60 cm frame with clipless pedals. Lucky I had renter's insurance and even more lucky they gave me full retail for the bike. (Bought it for $1,250 and they gave me $1,550). TIME FOR AN UPGRADE!!!
Was going to get a 2005 R1000, but on some advice from a riding buddy I tried the Cervelo Soloist. I liked the idea of a tri/road bike, but was very impressed that it did both duties with amazing grace. In the road setup it is fast and a monster on the hills. TT setup is equally as good. Houston has two shops that sell Cervelos and neither would budge from MSRP. Even then it was on back order for 5 weeks. Finally got it two months ago. They must have ran out of the Centaur forks cause it showed up with the Team model Cervelo Carbon fork. Finally have been able to put some good miles into it to see how it stacks up. I put on some Syntace aero bars and bought an extra seat and seat post so it is very easy to go between the two modes.
Campy Centaur group set is sweet. Shifts like a dream. The Easton Vista wheels are pretty good, but could be better.
I am really amazed that this bike is heavier then my Cannondale R800, but it feels overall faster and more responsive.
Did have to go a little bling and added carbon water cages and white CSC style bar tape.

By alternating between these machines I (1) keep "them" confused and (2) prove that the bike doesn't make the rider:
machineA - circa '96 Bianchi Champion del Mundo/Chorus 8sp (steel), "sweet steel dream"
machineB - '05 Jack Kane/DA 10sp (carbon rear/Al front), still earning herself a name

My job and current location (rainy winter of HI) have prevented me from putting in many miles (I’m at about 200 miles), but here's the early skinny.
Ride
I absolutely love my sweet steel dream, but there is something about Al that just puts the power to the pavement. I'm a power rider and the Bianchi BB swaps sides of the centerline every time I stand and crunch. The top tube and down tube of the JK are both deformed at the ends to account for the basic riding stresses (they are ovular at each end instead of round). The Bianchi has this on the lower end of the down tube, but the long axis in about half that of the JK’s Al down tube. This creates a huge amount of stiffness in the frame that you just don't typically find. In addition, the carbon parts (steer tube/fork, rear triangle, bars, and seat post) really smooth the ride. I put in over 5 years on a C-Dale, and I could definitely tell the difference in ride harshness between it and my steel ride. I don't notice it between these two bikes. She’s not stale like my old C-Dale. If you look closely, you’ll notice the two bikes are almost identically setup. This has been my starting point and I don’t see any reason to change it. I feel the same regardless of which bike I ride during and after the ride. I have noticed that the JK is a bit more twitchy at slow speeds, but I haven’t had any control problems. I can dump her into a downhill turn, stick to a wheel (or half one), or stand and drive up a hill when necessary without worries. I’ll probably get even more used to it in a month or so of daily riding. At least initially, I think that this frame puts together the snappy, no BB swinging stiffness of an Al bike with almost the smooth ride of a steel bike. Hard to believe? I'm still not convinced, but that's what I think right now.
Looks
I know that my Bianchi turns some heads b/c everyone thinks they're all supposed to be Bianchi-blue (the older steel ones) not pearl white and I’m the only chromed rear guy in the pack at the end of the ride. In addition, I think I've stuck a good balance between old/new pieces and parts on her. However, I know that the JK is a one of a kind, and she really turns the heads. Right now, I think that there are somewhere around 300 JKs out there, and none of the paint schemes are the same. I'm not going to see myself riding by, ever. Also, I'm really into more traditional bike lines. Although the JK is made of some non-traditional materials and has some non-traditional lines, she still has what I think is the "sexy" traditional bike look - level top tube, 73+/- seat tube, and a moderately raked fork. The mono seat stay is a big departure, but you can't have everything. Also, something you can’t see in the pictures is the complexity of the carbon stays and fork. They are not round or rounded, but rather sculpted. I’m not sure of the purpose (strength, power transfer, weight), but it does give her a cool up close look.
So that’s it for now…more miles will bring more enlightenment.

PEZ just did a write up on JK (actually the K Team Carbon like mine) @ https://www.pezcyclingnews.com/?pg=fullstory&id=3575.

Back in the saddle again. After 20+ yrs. , yes my A$$ is sore. Putting on the miles. Pretty hard core, high end cyclist 'round these parts! I feel like I'm riding a gutter cycle after seeing all these bikes y'all ride. I've got a longggggg way to go to outgrow it?
By the way, thanks to everyone, been lurking for 3 weeks, bought the Giant a couple weeks ago. Put over 200miles on her and am loving being out on the road (under 150mph, see avatar)

That is quite a nice stable you've got there. I am very impressed, not to mention jealous.
Thanks for sharing,
By the way...what about the tandem in the back of the first photo, and the bike that is hanging?

The tandem is an early 90's Burley Duett and the hanging bike is my wifes, a Calio mountain bike with slicks and a solid fork.

okie dokie...thanks for that. Don't you know you'll make those other bikes jealous if they don't get some camera time too?
