Are LBS like car dealers who have a year end clearance schedule? Or after Christmas?

Nows the time, new model year intros tend to begin about now so deals can be found on some brands, some give better deals than others as do some sellers give better deals than others. Truth be told the best deal I've found for myself was for my mountain bike via huck-and-roll, an online order. $3500 MSRP bike I got for $1600. You should be able to safely wait for a few months on some types and see prices fall when sellers need to clear out last years inventory to make way for he 2012 new hotness, it all depends on what your timing is, the type of bike you are looking at and all that good stuff.
hopefully others can chime in and correct or confirm what I've stated. I've given you my experience but it certainly wasnt a commuter bike.

Usually, you'll start to observe bicycle sales and drops in prices in the beginning of September. This usually lasts until the beginning of the following year. Of course, everything is dependent upon the model of the bike, the demand upon the bike, and its availability. While most bikes of the current year will experience some sort of clearance sale to make room for the inventory of the new bicycles, some may be in such critical demand, that they remain at premium prices. In general, look for current year prices to start dropping somewhere around September 01 20XX

PS.
The longer they're in inventory, the better the deal!

October 10-15 is by far the best time to purchase the current year's model. There are reams of scientific data backing this up. I don't have anything specific on hand to back this up, but if you do a little research, you will find it's true. Better get a move on.

That's how I got my previous-year Secteur for 40% off. :-)
