Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

We have an incredibly harsh and crappy forecast for the next 6-7 days. I wanted to pass on riding today but if I don't, I'll be consigned to the indoor machine and I'd rather ride outdoors. Time to get dressed to ride.

Yep, my Thanksgiving a.m. ride is going to be indoors this year. I will, however, leave work in the early afternoon today after my last meeting and thrash around the roads a bit.

I took a one day trip to Decatur yesterday, which I believe is somewhat near you. Simply beautiful weather for this time year, especially in comparison to SE WI. Had some excellent BBQ for lunch.

I’m about 75 miles from there. Don’t get down that way very often.

And, yes, it was an incredible day, fluffy clouds with light winds and near 60° temps. Took my wife out for 24 miles.

Pic above is a city bike I rented. Plan is to ride along coast from Málaga to Torremolinos and back tomorrow morning, before we hop on a bus to Granada.

Be careful. That while area was a crowded zoo when I was there in '85. When I was there in 2000 I made it along the coast as far west as Torre del Mar before heading back into the interior.

Are you going to have enough time in Granada to take a day trip to Ronda? I did that back in '98 during a non-cycling vacation. At the time you could catch two connecting trains. Cool ride, and Ronda is a neat town. Hemmingway used to hang there. The Tajo Gorge is the setting for the part of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" where the town's people force the Franco-supporting town officials to run from their office through people beating them with some sort of wood farm implements. They can choose to be beaten to death or jump into the gorge, which entails a 300m fall.

When the old bridge over the gorge was completed, the architect crawled out to inspect the parapets. A gust of wind blew his hat off. He reached for it, lost his balance and fell to his death.

Sad.

Rode the City Bike to Torremolinos and back. Was ok. Some of the route was gravel. The scenery along the Costa del Sol was quite good. Now getting ready to hop on a bus from Málaga to Granada.

indyfabz we bought train tix for daytrip to Ronda for yesterday but mrs datlas was under the weather and we did not want to leave her. So that will have to wait until next time. It gives us a good excuse to come back soon.

Sad. It's probably a scenic ride. Let us know how Granada is. When I was there in '98 the older part of the city was REALLY noisy thanks to traffic. Lots of students on loud scooters/mopeds. I know they have implemented a restricted traffic area since then. IIRC, only residents and tourists may drive there.
