Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What’s wrong with flirting? One good thing about being old and fundamentally unattractive is that women aren’t afraid of me.

East Coast lowbrow beer attempted invasions of the West Coast are all kinda silly.

Second "shakedown" ride on the new, bigger Circuit. I fixed the headset issue - I hope. I replaced the short, 80s-style Sakae seatpost with a longer, but similar-looking SR Laprade, and jacked the seat up about a cm.

First impressions: MUCH better! No longer felt like I was riding a BMX bike! However, after about 15 miles it was clear that the Rolls has to go. I was getting a hotspot where no hotspot should be, and I was unconsciously hunching over rather than rolling my pelvis torward. So that's it for the original seatpost and saddle. Maybe I'll put them back on the 22 inch frame. I decided to use the dark gray Avocet that I picked up last month.

The other issue that arose was that the Giro d'Italia bar lowers the hoods at least a cm compared to the Highway One, so I gave up half of what I gained with the larger frame. On the plus side, once the saddle height and setback were right, the bike no longer felt like a toy and I could get out of the saddle without it feeling weird. Still, I want to go back to the Highway one, which means getting a 110 stem. Then, when that guy in Poland is able to get me the reproduction Sante hoods in gray, I'll swap in the new stem and Highway One, since I'd have to take the levers off the bars to get the new hoods on anyhow. That's why bought TWO packages of bar tape!

The ride itself? Pretty good! I'm still getting used to the bike, so I'm a little tentative. Plus it was windy, and cold, and it was inceasingly drizzly rain for the last two miles. So, a baptism by...water, I guess!

It's supposed to rain tomorrow, so no ride, but I do hope to get in a few miles on Friday, ahead of the Monthly C&V Ride on Saturday.

I uploaded the langley race a couple weeks back. There was one picture of me in the break, had about a 20 second lead over the pack. Won’t let me upload it.

$1 16 oz. Iron City bottles got me through law school during lean times. Amazingly, IC Lite was even worse. It was a “girl beer” in Pittsburgh.

Never understood the RR craze. The only upside is that they sold 7 oz. “Ponies” so they would not get warm during summer BBQs.

We used to sell Old German quarts at the deli where I worked in ‘86. $1.
