Wtb: dynamo wheel/wheelset

I have been considering a modern dynamo hub system lately and am just getting to the point where I would like to pull the trigger on something. Ideally I am looking for a wheel/wheelset built around a nicer Shimano (hb-3n72 or similar) or maybe SP hub. For budget reasons I think a SON hub is out of the question. 32 or 36 spokes is fine and I am planning to stick with rim brakes for my commuter for now.

I figure it never hurts to ask the c&v crowd before buying something new. Anyone have an extra set or decide a dynamo system wasn't for them? Let me know what you've got, thanks!

You could keep an eye on Peter White's CLOSEOUTS page. Right now he's showing a $325 700c front wheel:
SON28 SL ISO disc black hub, 32 hole Velocity Chukker non-MSW rim, DB14 black spokes

A $300 26in front wheel:
SON20R black hub, 32 hole Velocity Aeroheat silver MSW rim, DB14 silver spokes

I like the idea of a dyno hub (good idea for consistent commuters, ultra-distance riders, just really cool).
But in practice, I don't think it's a wise option for me. I have opted to use battery powered lights that will also work when being plugged into an external pack. For me it's cheaper, more flexible across bikes, and I don't have to deal with trying to route wires.

PS-- If getting a pre-built SON generator make sure it's not the newer "connectorless" version that uses the frame for a ground path (or electrical return). . . well, unless your fork is set up for it, then you know what you want, but if you're asking for SP or Shimano dynos, then... you're not set up for the SON connectorless deal. . . ok. um. thanks.

I assume you’re looking for a 700c wheel? If just the one, silver rim or dark anodized?

Also, it’s hard to beat Velomine’s prices:

That Velomine set is a good deal. Handsome cycles also sells built wheels at fair prices. Disc brakes and thru axle are so ubiquitous now, it’s hard to find a good price on a good ‘ol rim brake hub.

I just looked long and hard for a used SON hub and like most bike parts, they were everywhere until I actually wanted one. I ended up buying new from Germany. I almost made the mistake on the connector-less version. They will be appended with “SL” . You can keep an eye on the Paceline marketplace; dynamos pop up there more often than here. Last year I bought a Shimano 3N72 hub on VO rim there at a great price and it turned out to be my across the street neighbor.

@morri869, I have a Kasei dynamo hub, 32-hole, I believe, that I unlaced from a wheel because it would occasionally make a horrible noise. Never failed to light the lamp, however. I'm willing to send it away for the cost of mailing if you want to roll your own.

If he passes on that hub PM me, I'd possibly buy it from you.

The Son20R is a good deal. Basically you are buying the hub & get it wrapped in a free rim & spokes. The only caveat is it doesn't, or is unlikely to produce enough juice for usb charging until higher speeds. For standard lighting though, it'd be about the best money could buy.

I have the exact same rim/spokes for my touring bike, but with the higher output Son28 on a 26 inch rim.

OP, FWIW: If you are doing any reading & analysis paralysis...I wouldn't pay any concern to the few watts of drag a hub dynamo hub produces. I find it's imperceptable at best. Drag concerns are a relic of the past. Nobody uses halogen lamps & bottle dynamos anymore.

Thanks for the offer! I will definitely pm you about it

This fits what I'm looking for as an entry into the dynamo lighting world on a budget. I should be able to get a decent wheel built out of it.

At this point matching wheels (700c) are not a priority. They're always nice to have but hey, for starting out this is perfect.

I was scoping these out too. Honestly that is a very nice price for that wheelset! I currently have a 40 spoke velocity dyad wheelset on my touring bike and they haven't needed any follow up truing after running them for the last 10 years.
