Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Same. I don't know how it's possible to have heart rate spikes like that.

Speaking of doctors, I was at one this morning, had a DRE (hoo boy).

Anyway, what is the point of the nurse taking your blood pressure as soon as you walk in the room? The reading was 130something, but I know if I'd sat there for a minute or two before she took it, it would have been lower.

This is in process cold setting a 126mm rear end to 132mm-ish.

From the factory those tubes were straight - I must have spread it out to at least 160mm-180mm before it took the set.

I was at least smart enough to brace the chainstay and seatstay bridges with tie-down straps.

I've read around here somewhere that '80s Treks were prone to brake bridge failures, so gotta be careful with them. On my Pinarello, I just started using a 130 wheel by spreading the stays (by hand) 'til the wheel dropped in. After running a 130 wheel for several years the rear triangle eventually became 130mm.

Agree. Unlikely to be real, especially if you were able to keep riding through it! Nevertheless, and assuming your doctor understands how frequent artifacts like this are with HRMs, showing it to her/him is not a bad idea.

Could you really tension up that webbing enough to do anything? That stuff is notoriously stretchy.

I haven't heard of that. Any idea if that was post 1985? Trek changed up their frames a lot that year.

Coming up on 1k since I cold set it, things seem to be fine so far

I felt confident about it at the time, and nothing's failed yet. Must not have been brazed an hour from closing time on a Friday.

YMMV, obv.

Steel is real(lly flexible)

Bicycle abuse.

I can't remember which years were impacted. There's a C&V guy who used to weld for Trek back then who told tales of bridge problems even when not spread.

I had an 88 trek 400 that I squeezed a 130 wheel in and it survived

Same on the old Puch. Horizontal drop ins, so a quality quick release was also key.

By the way, in reference to 2020, you can say kiss my ass.

And make sure it's tight. I've popped the axle out of the Old Schwinn dropouts more than once.
