First Look: My New Lynskey Commuter

Here's my new winter/commuter/baby-trailer-hauler. Apparently the last of the Urbanskey build, as Lynskey's taken this model off their refreshed website.

Cheers to Alan who with his gorgeous build and photos helped push me over the edge to make the call.

Here's a first look; the boys at my LBS just finished putting it all together. 2015 Lynskey Urbanskey in Industrial Mill finish (**update: SATIN finish by mistake!!**) with SRAM Force 22 Hydraulic Disc gruppo. I'm smiling uncontrollably

Thanks! Yeah, I also went graphics-free on the tubes for a more understated look and the badge really pops as a result. The cut-out Lynskey name on the rear of the rack is a nice touch too.

Very nice! Hope you enjoy as much as I do. Interesting that Lynskey has dropped the Urbanskey from the lineup. Guess that makes it a rare bike already.

I like the name cutout on the rack too. Heck I like everything. Congrats, and ride in good health!

Thanks everyone. Suffice it to say I'm really happy with it. They failed to ship the rear brake calliper so the LBS is chasing for that part. I'll also be getting fenders installed before taking it out, and fine tune the fit with the LBS's pro fitter, then - THEN - out on the road. Promise to post more pics.

Yeah kind of weird since I think it was only introduced in 2015. Hate the name but love that I got one - super keen on the CX frame and wheel clearance but I wouldn't be as happy with the Cooper CX housings that run along the top of the top tube. Much cleaner on the Urbanskey for my/our purposes.

Also happy I got the SRAM group as that's what I have on my other bike. Looks like they're only doing Cooper CX with Shimano groups now.

The Industrial Mill finish is duller than I expected but still gorgeous. I expected a bit more polish to it based on the limited photos online (including yours). Don't think I'll be hand polishing it like you did though: I can live with this finish just fine.

I was going to say that looks like the satin/bead blasted finish, rather than industrial mill/brushed. Stealthier looking, especially without graphics, and perhaps more traditional titanium frame finishing.

Hmmm now you've got me wondering. I'm gonna inquire about the finish with the manufacturer

arrrghhhh... they did finish it in Satin, not Industrial Mill. Can't figure out where the breakdown happened - my order conf. shows Industrial Mill, the packing slip invoice shows Satin. Following up through my LBS as we speak. Not totally sure how I feel. The Satin looks great esp. with the matte finish of the fork. However, the rack and seat post are both polished. And I know the Mill finish is easy to buff out any marks or nicks. Satin will weather just like any painted frame. Hmmm....

Lynskey's offering to take it back in, redo the frame as ordered and ship it back... Not sure... Not sure... Pretty gorgeous as it is now, but the maintenance is my biggest concern as I hope to have this bike for a long time.

What's the crowd opinion here?

What is Industrial Mill finish? Can you describe? I had an Eddy Merckx AX bike (made by Litespeed) with brushed finish and it was extremely easy to maintain. You could basically make it look like new by washing it and buffing the surface with a Scotchbrite pad using circular motions. If Industrial Mill is the same as polished, that would be a royal pain in comparison. The polished ti bikes I have seen get spots, fingerprints, scrapes, dull spots, etc., and there's no easy way to return to polished.

Go over the rack and seatpost with fine sandpaper and they will be satin as well...

The way I understand, after welding the frame, they bead blast every frame to even out the finish and remove any welding discoloration (they call it a Satin finish). The the next step is to machine brush the frame with a drill and brushing attachment, which makes it shinier and brighter (Industrial Mill). Then they will handbrush with scotchbrite strips to remove any machine brush marks, for an even shinier and more even finish (Handbrushed). The final and most expensive step is polishing, which almost no one does, and looks almost like chrome.

Neither the satin nor the polished finish can be easily maintained. The brushed finish can be redone with a scotchbrite pad. For ease of maintenance, I would opt for a brushed finish, plus I think it looks better than the duller blasted finish.

Actually, you would have to bead blast the parts to make them duller to match the satin finish. Sandpaper or any abrasive will make them brighter.
