New winter cycling boot coming this December. The "Wolvhammer"

Summer is short in these parts. Today may be the last day it reaches 90 degrees or more this year. What better time to introduce a new winter cycling boot?

If I had an extra $325 to spare and I actually used clipless pedals in the winter, I might be interested. It at least looks like it's going to be warmer than what's currently available for cycling boots.

Info available at 45 Nrth

No claims on temp rating as of yet. Available in December. A local bike shop informed me that I can pre-order with $50 down.

I saw that over on the winter forum. It looks pretty capable to me. Definitely a step up from my Specialized Defrosters.

My feet would be soaking wet wearing those even well below freezing temperatures.

45Nrth is another QBP brand like Surly, All-City, Civia, etc. It's focus will be on cold weather cycling products. The brand launched last year which ironically turned out to be the warmest, least snowiest winter I can remember.

People's reactions to weather extremes varies a lot but I do think feet are one of hardest parts of your body to keep warm when it's really cold out. By really cold, I mean single digits and below.

If I had $325 (+ the Canadian premium) to spare, I'd be tempted. To date, I've used platforms in the winter (what little winter riding I've done) because I like the idea of being able to quickly put my foot out to brace myself if I start going down on the ice, but then again, I've never actually prevented a fall on ice that way, so maybe being attached to the bike is no worse anyway.

Fingers and toes. A couple years ago I commuted in -28C (-18F) temps; the trip took an hour and my fingers and toes were so numb that I was nearly in tears due to the pain while warming up again at my destination. I won't attempt a ride like that again without better gloves and boots.

Still waiting on studded fat tires. Apparently there is one in the works from 45NRTH.

My lower limit is around 40F. That's when ice typically starts to form on the roads around here, and I'm not buying studded tires to commute. I'll drive those days.

Luckily, we usually only get a week or two of conditions like that. Rain I can handle, and I've found my shoe covers do just fine for keeping my feet dry and warm.

I had a couple of fingertips lopped off and that pain was nowhere near as bad as the extended torture of 'frozen' fingers and toes warming back up.

"At a mere 1275 grams" - they do have a sense of humor.

I'm more interested in the Polara. Wonder how it compares to the Nokian?

One of the pics above the Polara looks very much like a spot between Lake Nokomis and Lake Hiawatha, - maybe a mile from my house and sometimes part of my summer commute.

Too bad it doesn't come in a 20". I'd get the Hüsker Dü just to have the name of one of my favorite bands from the 80s emblazoned on my wheels.

My $30 hiking boots with some $5 wool socks got me through all Minneapolis could muster the past two winters. $325 should be the cost of an excellent winter bike, not winter boots.

For a tire that's 4 inches wide and 240 studs, that's actually pretty good. My Schwalbe Marathon Winter 700x35 tires weigh 910 grams...

I would think that any LBS that has a QBP account can order them. I'm told they are already sold out of a lot of the larger and smaller sizes. They are hoping to get a second manufacturing run this season as the demand has been immediate and really strong.

Gotta draw the line somewhere . . . $175-225 per tire is way beyond what I would consider paying for a tire. Hope the price comes down some day. Until then, I'll have to make do with some scrawny 26 x 1.75s.
