Hi,
my newest bike is a PK Fat Ripper 26, so an 800$ or so bike

wonder if I should be worried about say, riding it to the movie theater and having it locked outside for 2 hours.
are Fat Tire bikes a big theft target compared to bikes in general? Or does the uniqueness of it help deter thieves from potentially reselling them?

Love the bike, but always worried about going places with it cause I'm afraid its so awesome someone might want to steal it.

IDK your Neighborhood, Use of security chains and Not cables is a start. and lock it up to stuff.

I wouldn't be too worried, if it's chained. theaters have a lot of foot traffic so I doubt a thief would be trying to pluck one, at least during the daytime. night time may be a different matter.

Location is everything. Some places no bike is safe, other places you can leave a bike unlocked with little fear. Most places are somewhere in between. The pro thieves are hard to stop, but they're looking for pricier frames. Your bike is more a target for opportunists and a good u-lock or chain in a public place stops them most of the time.

they do. some place had a couple on craigslist recently. just looked but they're gone. there's one in cincy with a kind of cruiser-ish frame on there now though.


I know sun makes one, and macargi (I mean to pick up their royal dutch if cash and availability ever sync up for me). I'm sure there are others.

I wouldn't leave a bike I liked more than 10 minutes. At a minimum I'd use a U lock but seriously, if you want to leave a bike for hours, find a crappy bike to use.

My daughter used to rider her cruiser to work, just had a cable lock. It was eventually stolen. Bought a replacement bike for $50 and the U-lock for $40. Dumb, but just didn't want the hassle of finding another bike so bit the bullet. Never had another problem.

I don't think the uniqueness is a deterrent. A friend had his Rans recumbent stolen last summer. Pretty unique bike, but expensive.

Both Electra and Sikk make fat cruisers. I just bought an Electra that is going to be electric. Pun intended.

if the bike is shiny and new it will be attractive to thieves bc they want to sell it for $.

if the bike isn't, maybe the wheels & tires are. I heard the tires alone are quite expensive?

U-locks are easily snipped through in a matter of seconds using cheap bolt cutters. About the only lock I've seen that is innovative and isn't easily breachable (yet) is the Litelok... but of course it has a hefty price tag.

When I lived in Chicago ALL bikes were a target no matter the lock. I ended up riding a rusty ladies 10 speed if I was barhopping. Kinda ruined my street cred but helped with my anxiety over potentially having my bike disappear.

My brother also just bought the pk ripper anniversary edition cruiser. Such a sweet bike! In black and gold. I hope you lock it up with titanium chains and install a lojack device .
