Funny that NBC Sports Network is just using the established NBC name to establish itself in the market despite having little or nothing to do with NBC.

NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) is a sports-oriented cable television channel in the United States operated as a division of NBC Sports. It previously launched on July 1, 1995, as the Outdoor Life Network (OLN), which was dedicated to programming primarily involving fishing, hunting, outdoor adventure programs, and outdoor sports. By the turn of the 21st century, OLN became better known for its extensive coverage of the Tour de France, but eventually begin covering more "mainstream" sporting events — resulting in its relaunch as Versus in September 2006.
Comcast, the original owner of Versus, acquired a majority stake in media company NBC Universal in 2011. As a result, Comcast would merge the operations of its cable channels with those of NBC. In particular, it aligned the operation of its sports channels with NBC's sports division, NBC Sports. On January 2, 2012, Versus was re-branded as the NBC Sports Network to reflect these changes.

NBC Universal sports can go jump off a cliff! They were in my market for over a year and they were free over the airwaves. Now they are going to cable t.v.

It was just a really lame joke about taking an old, established brand and using it to sell a new, unrelated product. That's all. It clearly wasn't funny or clever enough.

ACK! And I'm definitely not going to upgrade my basic package just so I can that channel back.

LOL. I'm with 'ya now. I'm in the business and there are some "purists" that take the position that when NBC Uni bought Versus, they killed OLN and took their hunting shows off the air.

that was hardly produce placement. who could even tell it was a BD bike? most of the public that watched that was looking at the hockey player.

Raising the Abyss
NBC Sports Network is to NBC as Bikes Direct is to Motobecane... or something like that.
But you're right about the purist thing.
Doc, you are a scoundrel.

I was bored last night and went scanning through the channels. Nothing where Versus used to be and I couldn't find NBC sports. A little annoying.

You are all missing the point. Cycling (yellow jersey, tdf) was mentioned during the superbowl!!! Cycling, in a positive light, being marketed to main stream America. What a wonderful benefit for cyclists and cycling as a whole!!

Yeah, probably true. I was able to ID the bike right away during the live broadcast. Guess I've spent too much time in pro and anti BD threads.

wait...bikes direct sells hocky stuff?
i didn't understand the commercial. i'm now even more glad i don't own a tv.
i assume the bike used is from bikes direct? (i honestly genuinely don't know, i don't use bikes direct).
perahps they just needed a bike as a prop and that's the bike someone had?

I enjoy NBC Sports Network and did with Versus, et al. I watched high lights from the Tour down Under yesterday evening on NBCSN and it was nice to see some Bicycling coverage. Always watch the Tour de France and Tour of California there. They had the Tour of champions from Colorado last year pretty much in whole as shown. I bookmarked their website and use it to keep track of Bicycling and Hockey on TV. Never thought I'd see NBC as a cycling network in any way.
Hi Doc, good to see you posting occasionally. How is the neurosurgery going so far? Didn't you finish your fellowship at Walter Reed?

Tour Down Under on NBC Sports was damn near useless.
You cannot cover a 4-5 hour stage in 30 minutes of programming and then give up 12-15 minutes for commercials.
I was glad to see cycling, absolutely, but it was utterly frustrating try to follow the race with such huge jumps in time. You almost never saw any attacks in the mountains/hills, bridging from the peleton to the breakaway, or anything besides the sprint points and the finish.

I am personally trying to improve upon the TV coverage of cycling. Should my team (not a cycling team) and I be successful, I'll post more info.
