yes.

this being a bicycle forum, and specifically touring sub-forum, i would guess
just about everyone here would use a touring bike for survival transport.

using a good quality touring bike would make a lot of sense easy to pack up your gear (home) and move on ,if you were homeless on the streets you would not have that choice.
if your healt and money situation is ok then no better lifestyle if u ask me.
no kids no wife no house to worry about, mind u all those things are good but not for everyone. i wish u well stay safe and keep the faith.

If you look at military bikes they are pretty much super rugged touring bikes.

Survival "road" conditions would dictate a gravel grinder or adventure bike. Hurky, tough.

Tim- that's an interesting and informative post. I suggest you cross post it in the actual Foo section or ask a mod to move this one. It will get more views there. Your LHT will be a great bike to escape an apocalypse, you are well equipped for any emergency!

I like the question and am ever fearful that i'll be homeless when my mother dies. or have to go live with my sister. If you have a good touring bike you'd be tempted to sell it to get by for a little while but I also consider stockpiling some equipment for my own personal apocalypse. maybe i should spend my money and time ensuring i dont end up in this position. A touring bike is a great tool. You dont need fuel and you can tour so as to not attract too much attention. Although getting some help may or may not be helpful. On top of ssdi I'd expect you also qualify for section 8 housing. Even if not and even in NY you can get a room in a halfway house type situation for $500 and have $100 a week for food. Not great but survivable then you can make some crafts or hustle to get a little extra and have something to do.

Back to being a homeless biker strategies. First more finance: one thing i think is what Ramsey said "How hard is it to get through a month?" You can survive 1 month without spending anything, right there is a used LHT with $953 a month from ssdi if you can get someone to feed you for 30 days. Electronics will be hard to keep dry, in good working order and charged.

One thing that seems good is I've seen 2 different towable trailers. If people think you're on tour as opposed to homeless you can get away with sleeping more places. One is fairly small, another looks like an airstream trailer and a third still looks like a coffin. The airstream type one is a bit large to push but you're in no hurry to get anywhere and it attracts some good attention if it looks cool. more difficult to hide with a trailer like that so you'll have to keep moving, be friendly and move on when the cops tell you to. guy was pulling that with a walmart bike and another bike frame rigged up as a trailer hitch. there are also some communities in the desert, some may be free, others you can get an acre of sand for $500, half your ssdi. Theres no water but no one can tell you you're tresspassing. You'd need to pay some land taxes and Utah is the best bet as there are little to no building codes in many places so you're free to build a shack with no running water or electric or foundation. $10 a day on food leaves you $600 a month for gear and repairs. You certainly need to cook whole ingredients. Pasta, rice, beans, and fresh vegetables.

An interesting book might be Igoni Barret "Love is power or something like that" which has a few short stories detailing life in modern day Nigeria. You might not get meat today, you might be grateful for grandmas yam porridge though even they were concerned about having a shack with no electric to live in.

other alternatives are not to stealth camp but build a bunker somewhere. People hide in active war zones with people actively searching for them. Water towers old abandoned i guess, shipping containers seem to be better options. it may require laying down some capital which could be lost but better than losing your life. It takes a lot of work to build a secret lair.

That's a pretty brutal thing to say to someone with Tim's challenges. Be kind. Everyone is fighting a battle that you know nothing about.

fBob, that's pretty harsh, especially coming from one who surely holds the BF record for sheer volume of irrelevant and incomprehensible posts!
