Chainring question.

So, I have a standard 48-36-26 triple and I am having downhill speed issues. I find my bike running out of teeth when putting the pedals to the metal. Would jumping from 48 to 50 or 52 make that much of a difference ? Or am I dreaming. BTW my cassette is 11-32. I am sure if I make the jump my chain will have to be upgraded to be a bit larger. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank in advance homies !!

Well, it's easy to calculate the percentage increase in gearing. A 50/48 gives you a 4.2% increase and a 52/48 gives an 8.3% increase. So if you are pedaling at 30mph in your 48T chainring, the same rpm in a 50T would give you 31.3 mph and a 52T would give you 32.5 mph.

Going from the 48T to a 52T chainring will require 2 more half-links or 1" more chain.

Yes Thank YOU ALL !! Oddly enough I had a 29er with a smaller chainring that bombed these hills with plenty of teeth left to go. To the point of scary fast.

Coasting is not how we convince those we are passing in cars to come over from the darkside. HAHHA I just like to go fast brother.

I find it easier to go faster down the Finger lakes hills we have here in NYS by pedaling up to whatever then tucking and coasting. It's easy to hit 40-50mph on the bigger hills this way and over that on a few when the wind is just right. BTW my high gear is a 46/11 and I weigh 150lbs.

I wonder how high a cadence the OP finds to be comfy. Andy.

Same here. I have a 53 x 12, which is very close to the OP's high gear. Once I stop pedaliing at 110 rpm or so, tucking and coasting adds a bit more speed, since the reduced aero position makes up for coasting.

I'm not very familiar with triples, so not sure if a larger chainring would exceed the capacity of your front derailleur to also handle the 26 small ring.
