child stoker kit ring position
I'm getting a used kit that is not assembled and has no instructions... does the timing chain move to the outside ring position and the kid's chain goes on the inside? Or vice versa

I suppose it could depend on the gear but, I believe when I did it, it could go either way. I put the kiddie stoker chain on the outside so I could get the kit on and off more easily.

My Tandems East kiddy cranks came with a very wide BB spindle. I had a narrower model in my parts bin (who doesn't these days) and used it to reduce the Q factor for The Young Bloke.
Now we use the Thorn double-drilled standard cranks (he is a tall 6.5 years) on the back of the Fuji Absolute LE.
All great fun riding with the kids.
Cheers

Yes, same for me. Outside ring.
If you do this, though, make sure to move the front timing ring to the inside of the front crank spider so your chainline is aligned. Not a huge deal on the timing side to have them a little off if you don't move it, but just makes things tidier IMO.
As an aside, when we ran a stoker kit on the middle position of our triplet I had the stoker chain run to the drive-side (right side) into a drive crankset that I added, rather than on the timing side. This kept things a lot simpler with all the timing chains on the triplet.
