Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Specialized Diverge - School me on sizing, gearing, mods, etc.

I am interested in purchasing a new Specialized Diverge.
Looking at the Diverge A-1, Diverge E5, and the subcompact
Basically an aluminum frame Diverge.
Not sure of sizing. I am 5'10" with a 30" inseam. I test rode a 54
and it felt fine. One Spec shop recommends a 54 the other shop
says 56?
Waiting for the shop to get in a 56 to try.
I've been riding mountain bikes for years, so not sure of road bike
sizing.
What about gearing, some models have 32/48(11-32) sub compact
has 32/48 (11-32), E5 has 34/46 (11-34)?
Any suggested mods anyone has done to their bike would be great.
I know sizing is a personal thing, but any input/feedback would also
be appreciated.
thanks

I'm also curious. But shouldn't the LBS properly fit you for the specific bike?

I'm 5'9
I have a 54 Sequoia. It is definitely too short of a frame for me. I wish I had gone 56.

I am getting a 2018 Diverge and after test riding a 56, it fit perfectly, stem a little long (It looked like it was a 110mm stem, I'd probably go 90 or 100, but that's because I have stubby arms). For reference's sakes, I own a 2015 56cm Roubaix and it fits like a glove. The Diverge has a VERY low top tube, so standover is pretty easy even for stubby legs

As for gearing, it all depends on your fitness level and the type of terrain you will be riding. A subcompact 48-32t paired with an 11-32t will give you a ton of gearing selection. I wouldn't get wrapped around the axle on the small differences. I rode the Diverge with the Praxis 48-32t and I was pretty impressed with it, alot more impressed than I remember (it had Shimano 105 shifting)

and yes, any LBS worth a damn will take time and thoroughly fit the bike to you, and will be willing to swap out things like stems and handlebars to ensure proper fit (within $$$ reason of course - you aren't getting carbon S-Works handlebars to replace cheap alloy ones, for example)

What is your wingspan? Would you prefer high or lower bars relative to the saddle? The 54 would lower the bars at but. The new diverge has a pretty tall stack and tends to have a shorter reach than most bikes.

If I had to guess I would say the 56, but if you want a more aggressive position then you may prefer the 54
