'85 Eddy Merckx Professional, 55cm, Dura Ace

Up for sale is this excellent refurbished Eddy Merckx Professional with the desirable flat crown 'signature' fork. Size is 55cm square. Frame was purchased from fellow BF'er Horatio in January, then after examination sent to Al Wanta in Florida for a super paint job in titanium metallic (it's a Ford color, easy to match).

Build is all Dura Ace 7400 6 speed indexed from my private collection of new or nearly new DA components. Of particular interest are the brake levers and hoods, which are NOS and perfect in every way. Saddle is a ProLogo with Merckx branding, stem is a 3TTT, seatpost a polished aero Shimano 640X, bars are Cinelli 64-40's.

Wheels are handbuilt by me: 7400 hubs laced to Alex Crostini 3.2 rims (my understanding is that these are identical to Kinlin XR rims) with Sapim DB spokes and Vittoria Rubino ProIII clincher tires. Freewheel is a Shimano 6208 13-26 rebuilt by our own PastobBobinNH. All of the consumables are top notch and new- period correct NOS Dura Ace housing, Shimano stainless cables, KMC chain & white leather Sella Italia bar tape.

Pictures don't do it justice, it is simply stunning in person.

Price is $1350 plus shipping; I pack correctly and use BikeFlights. You can also contact me directly at rccardr@cox.net or via cell/text at 7039873346. More pics can be found here:Merckx Gray 85 Professional Slideshow by rccardr | Photobucket

This is my size and it's just a beautiful bike. Someone is going to get a heck of a bike. Good thing I blew my bike budget this year already.

Sorry, Bill, meant to post it in Sales originally. Old man brain f$rt, I guess.

At any rate, this has been sold. Took about 25 minutes from posting!

Someone got a nice bike!

Is that the original decal set?

What tubeset is it? SL?

I have one in cobalto blue with the same fork, same seat stay pantos, and same decals. I haven't been able to figure out what exact year or model it is. The fork always seemed to throw me off. If I found one with the flat crown fork, it had different graphics. This seems to be an exact match.

Repaint, so not original decals. SL tubeset. Serial number helps to determine general date of manufacture, but you'll never know exactly.

Flat crown fork with signature logo generally predates Merckx bike logo on crown.

Serial # on the BB shell can be helpful to date.

Eddy Merckx Serial Numbers

I have an '85 Pro in Reynolds 753 that has a sloping fork crown (also present on an '85 Pista frame I briefly owned). My '89 Century has a flat crown with the EM logo.

excavations, sorry: Corsa 1986 ( cut-off lugs !); first slope crown forks - 1981 (Aero), used as often as flat crown since late 1982. "Flat crown" has been used since the beginning of production in EM, then in Corsa, exceptionally in Team Panasonic 86/87 ( Pro SLX / Corsa Extra), since 1988 they appeared in Century and were available until 1992 (well sold - known: De Rosa .

This bike is like Mary Poppins: practically perfect in every way. I hope the lucky new owner puts some gumwall tires on it and enjoys it to no end.

Please note posting dates.
Bike was sold over two years ago.
Buyer offered it back to me at the price he paid for it, and I foolishly declined.
He sold it soon after and, as I recall, made a reasonable profit on it.

Meanwhile, oddly enough, I've finished an even nicer 55cm 7-Eleven Merckx with 8 speed Dura Ace that will be up for sale when we get back from France in the fall...
