Refugee from the scrap pile.
Pulled this off a scrapper's truck a couple years ago just because it was interesting. Anything that was chrome plated was rusted far worse than you can tell in the pictures and the components were REALLY cheap.
My first plan was to build a psuedo-klunker but decided the parts I had in it were worth a lot more than the frame so I stripped it back down. I was given a Huffy 10 speed MTB a few weeks ago and it had index shifting on the rear derailleur and it worked great. I did some digging in my parts stash and came up with an old pair of Araya MTB wheels, some BMX brake calipers and other pieces I had bought for projects that just didn't work as planned. The components are now just cheap, not REALLY cheap. I started fitting it all together Saturday morning and by Sunday afternoon had this............
It rides better than it has any right to, if I didn't have to have 2 miles of seat post showing to comfortably ride it I'd probably keep it.

Looks great
Good work. That seat is a perfect compliment to the frame.

Yeah, the saddle is like it was made just for this. I bought it for a flip bike and it just wasn't a good match. I threw it on this and knew right away it was staying.

Nice bike, and a good rebuild! I did something similar with an old Schwinn, and with nice Alu wheels it is great fun to ride.

What kind of riding are you going to do? How does your bike feel?

Thanks. Unfortunately just test rides, I'm 6' 1-1/2" and 230 Lbs. I'd have to have another foot of seatpost to ride it very far and I don't trust the seat tube or that much unsupported seatpost to take the kind of stress I'd put on it. It rides and handles like a dream and will stop on a dime. I so wish it fit me!

This just in....... I raised the seat 3 inches and it's just right, need a couple inches at the bars and more stem reach and it will be about perfect so I'm keeping it. Might put some 26 X 2.125 cruiser tires on it.

Now all you need is a tank.
You want a Hawthorne/Rollfast/Western Flyer (smaller than a Schwinn) full cantilever tank or demi-tank.

And that is an excellent conversion! I'd consider it if I weren't going to start paying for a Schwinn Hornet straightbar from the 50s next month.

Thanks, I decided to make it work for me, may even do a 700c conversion, it has the clearance and I have the wheels. Tektro 559 brakes have the correct reach and I also just happen to have a NIB set of those. It rides better than some of my supposed "good" bikes! To think, I almost let it stay on that scrapper's truck, sure glad I didn't.
