As the title states, I'm trying to remove a suntour cartridge bottom bracket without the proper tool. I've asked around at a few shops, and no one seems to have it. I tried a cold chisel and a punch on one side, and that led to dented teeth on the cup.

The cups are not completely rusted, but there are signs that it is thoroughly stuck in the bottom bracket. Does anyone have a way to apply a good amount of force to the cups without the right tool? I've already tried a pin spanner, kroil, vice grips on the outside...

Going to need pics for something this specific and in my experience lack of the correct tool is usually responsible for the distress and by the time it is acquired it may be too late. That being said we know bikes can often lead to this, so where there is a will there is a way.

Holy crap, thats ugly, any chance a freewheel tool might work? If the pin spanner is a tight fit you could back it up with a socket, camp it all together with a bar clamp and pour the coals to it, maybe get lucky. You could try to make a tool out of a socket by cutting 4 dogs with a cutoff wheel.

Maybe you're asking for the wrong tool. Nobody knows what suntour is anymore. BBT-18 may fit those too, can't remember. It has 8 pins. You should be able to verify from the measurements. Still available for sale. https://www.amazon.com/Park-Tool-BBT.../dp/B000R9G7MO

Punch and hammer is the wrong tool. IF you don't have the correct tool, you would have to make your own.

Assuming you know this, but if you don't: Make sure you are turning the right way, which is the wrong way on the drive side.

BBT-18 is for octalink/isis; it doesn't fit.

Ideally I'd find a solution that doesn't involve making a tool. I was also turning it in the right direction.

For reference, there have been threads like this before, and most of them say "go buy the tool on ebay" or "i have one, i'll lend it to you."

I know it's for the octalink, Are you sure the BBT-18 doesn't fit the Suntour too?

If the inner and outer diameters are with a mm or two, it'd be possible to modify it to work.

I put one in using the tips of a needle nose pliers.

I had to borrow a tool from someone to get one out. Fantastic piece- those Suntour VX bottom brackets!

Sheldon says the FR-6 4 pin freewheel tool can remove the old suntour BB.



BB's tend to require a whole lot of force, which is why improvised tools don't tend to work for them.

I've physically put the tool onto the bottom bracket. it does not even closely fit.

A Suntour TA-230 is the tool that's needed for these bottom brackets. I've gotten them off (of non-rusty BBs) with an adjustable pin spanner.



Someone had a handful of these on eBay about 2 weeks ago for $15 each. Don't know if they were sold or the listing expired.

With modification, if you're lucky.

I know one person with that tool, and I've lost track of him.

Copious amounts of something like PB Blaster and a jury rigged tool if you can't locate or modify a tool.

You can do that, but it chews up the "teeth" or slots on the cup thing.

Why do people not say "eBay?" People don't obscure Nashbar or Yellow Jersey, or Harris Cyclery or any other store or business. And then there's nowhere else to get the parts and stuff procured from eBay.

If the threads aren't rust-welded shut, this can work. It's actually how I removed my own Suntour BB. Not pretty when it's done, but I never intended on reusing it anyway.
