Put an old 11 speed Shimano cassette on a new wheel?

I have an old bike with a circa-1999 Shimano 9 speed cassette on the rear wheel (the whole drivetrain is 105 triple). I'd like to upgrade my wheelset... will I be able to put my 9 speed cassette on a "modern" 11 speed wheel? Seems like I should, as the 9 should take the same/less space, but wanted to check with the experts here...

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can do it. I believe you need a 1.85mm and 1mm spacer.

7, 8, 9, and 10 speed cassettes are all the same width and all fit on the same freehub. 11 speed, however, is slightly wider. So to put your 9 speed cassette on an 11 speed freehub, you need a 1.85mm spacer. Like this one:

Most likely the wheel set will come with the required spacer.

It's worth noting that because of the extra cassette width to pack another gear in (the extra width you'll be spending on that nice spacer), 11-speed wheels have slightly more dish than Shimano 8/9/10 speed wheels. This is more of a theoretical problem than a practical one, though.
