How to adjust Cinetica stem length

So back in 2015 I built my vintage carbon Giant Cadex 980c project and put an adjustable Cinetica stem on it. 5 years later I'm no longer in my 20s and want to shorten the length of it but never really figured out how to remove the spacers. I loosened the bolt next the spacers but cant fully remove the black front part of the stem to slide them out. Any advice? Am I doing it wrong?

I would suspect that you need to remove the bolt completely. Having it catch would seem like a good fail-safe.
