Need shorter cranks on a Shim BB-5500.
Is there anything between 155 and 160 available for that style of BB ? If not, is there anything that I can swap to to make it happen? Currently has 39/53, and I'm not dead set on keeping that config.
Thanks.
Thanks.

For that style of BB, I don't think so. But you can swap to a square taper BB and run an Origin8 crankset which are available in those lengths. I have that on my son's bike and it works perfectly fine with his Tiagra 4400 9 sp drivetrain.

Find what ever cranks you like that have the length you want and then see if they have a compatible BSA threaded BB for them. Most BB's are inexpensive.
Personally, I'd avoid square tapers. Especially if this is a road bike. 2 piece cranksets are the direction I'd go not knowing more about your bike and your riding.

yes BBR60 and modern cranks are nice, but nothin wrong with square taper (currently have bikes with square taper, one bike about to be moved to octalink v1 (which is what BB 5500 is), and one with 105 5800 2 piece cranks, with bbr 60....which are the only ones that have ever loosened on me )

Mark Stonich at BikeSmithDesign offers a crank shortening service. Basically, he takes your current crank, drills and taps new pedal eyes at the length you desire, and trims the excess off the ends of the arms:

I do agree that there is nothing wrong with square tapers. They've been around forever.
But of all the different ways to put cranks on a BB spindle, square tapers require the most information, knowledge and sometimes guesswork. And they did come about before international trade and there were a lot of different square taper standards and everone making a crank with their own idea of where the chain rings should sit in relation to the end of the spindle which required numerous spindle lengths to get the proper chain line with different cranks. Though it isn't quite as bad with cartridge square taper BB's and modern square taper cranks, but it is still there somewhat. IMO.
More modern crank attach methods don't require as much information and much less guess work. A two piece crank doesn't require very much info to select the proper one for a bike. Though I, like a lot of others overly obsess about what BB to use with a 2 piece crank the first time we get one. Probably because being use to square tapers we don't find the information that we've come to expect from our experience with sq. tapers. After a while with more understanding of 2 piece cranks we realize all that info isn't needed any more.
