can the campy rally RD handle a 7 speed?

We all know and love the larger cogs they can take. And isn't a 7 speed (freewheel, not cassette) the same chain spacing as a 6 speed, just meant for wider (126 or 130) spread?

No reason a friction shifted rally can't handle the extra, right?

Yes, I consulted S. Brown and VeloBase before inquiring.

I've been using a Super Record with a Rally cage for 20 years on a 7 spd. freewheel, plenty of travel. Thats friction with Barcons and a 23 or 24 cog

I have had trouble with my old Campagnolo RALLY 1st gen handling 6 speeds. I think it has to do with my modified Simplex hangar that I tapped. My solution is going to be removing the Simplex hangar and welding on a steel hanger. The tolerances are minuscule actually. I only need to have the RALLY attachment about 3mm lower then the SIMPLEX attachment provides to have the clearance I need. Just 3mm makes a big difference...

So... Can the RALLY handle 7 cogs on a freewheel. Yes... It has the needed travel provided it is positioned on the derailleur hangar properly. Or rather the derailleur hanger puts it in a position to provide that travel.

I used a super record with 9 speed. Also with campagnolo dt shifters. I did finally give up and moved over to a slant parallelogram Shimano, but only because the pulleys on the Campagnolo derailleur broke.
I guess I wouldn't recommend it though.

Mine is a Campy Rallye (2nd gen) easily shifting a 12-36 8-speed cassette. 42-52 up front. Lots of capacity to spare.
