Repainted 72 Schwinn Paramount in Campus green. Pictures and video!

Hey guys,
I finally got my 72 paramount built. Took so long. Probably because I wanted to film it and I was having editing softare issues and I was busy. The paint turned out excellent. This is one of the last frames done by Waterford before Richard closed his doors. Check out the bike pron.

Very cool video! Your getting good at this. I’m envious of the Campus Green color. I’ve got a Paramount from 73 that needs new paint and chrome and Richard Schwinn is no longer available for painting. I wish I could do exactly what you’ve done. I really like some of the choices you made from the gold Regina chain to the Brooks Professional Special saddle and matching bar tape. I especially appreciate hearing you say Cam-pan-yolo. Nicely done!

A fun video, and so nice to see the interactions with Richard Schwinn! All of the folks at Waterford did so much to broaden the appreciation for hand crafted steel frames, and it's unfortunate that the market seems to have moved on.

The Campus Green does look good, but I've been wondering if it is a "flamboyant" color (i.e. a gold base layer with a tinted clear top layer) or if it was a more conventional paint, but perhaps with some pearl or metal flake? I was looking through my 1976 Schwinn catalog, and it says that the Paramount was available in any color, except chrome. Unfortunately, there's not a page where they show the various colors.

Congrats John with your new Schwinn Permanent (pun). Well done and fitting conclusion with Richard Schwinn.

[PS. If you need details and instructions on the Cateye Solar, let me know. They must've been proud back then with the elaborate packaging. Almost want to use this funky one, but its the charming packaging that steals the show.]

The campus green is a fabulous color for the job at hand. Very good choice. Have always wanted a Paramount, just never came across one in my journeys. Good to know this one is a rider.
Back in the day I built plenty of frames with Campagnolo Nuovo Record group sets. I think I probably did the last few by muscle memory alone, didn't even need to look at what I was doing! After the headset and seat post install it was a 30 minute job to get the rest installed and running. The stuff always worked as it was so simple and reliable.

I am jealous!

About the Cateye Solar. We sold them mainly to cyclotourists. The cadence feature and no need for batteries seemed to especially appeal to them. I still have NIB Cateye's original bike computer with the big ring that mounted to the front wheel. Amazing how different stuff is today.

Hey Steve. According to Richard its a "Candy" finish. Two stage paint.

I wouldn't mind being seen by my students and fellow faculty riding a Campus Green Paramount on campus.

the first bicycle I bought was that color of Sting-Ray. Coppertone was not offered that year. I was 9 1/2 years old and the shop insisted they call my home to make sure it was ok. Took near 34 months of diligent saving to buy it. Previous bike was stolen and parents refused to buy the next. Interestingly, there was never any offer to help later. So it goes. When I was 10 I was given The Complete Book of Bicycling. Was time to save for a real road bike.

Agreed, even though I don’t have students or fellow faculty.

What is its destiny? Will it be a collector’s item, or is it destined for sale?

You'll have to ask JJ himself, but I presume it's part of his awesome collection. Check out his website -- it's pretty inspiring.

Personal thing, but I usually prefer to replace caged bearings with loose.

I am also a Campus Green fan. It lookS completely different in different light and Schwinn might have gone lighter or heavier on the paint when they painted them in a paint lot, which will give them different looks. I spent a considerable amount of time and effort trying to find an automotive paint close enough match to Campus Green. I ended up buying it from Koolest Kolors to get the "for sure" match.

Great job on your Campus Green Paramount. It looks awesome. I am also glad to hear that it will be ridden. I've got to check out your Jack Taylor too.

Campus Green and other Schwinn Flamboyan (Candy) colors are painted a silver color first. This is actually the same color as Schwinn's Grey Ghost or Silver Mist. Then the semi-translucent, metallic color coat is applied over the silver. With just the right amount of paint, the silver can shine through, at least in bright light and give it a candy apple look. Schwinn used flamboyant paint for Coppertone, Sky Blue, Lime, Chestnut (Root Beer) and Violet in addition to Campus Green. There may have been some others that were not as famous as those. I remember red and an orange looking like candy apple paint.
