Well, I'm 50 today...
...so I guess I'll have to check this place out when I'm not on the road bike forum. Anything interesting happen over here that I should know about first...running feuds, stupid posters, etc. so as to avoid any pitfalls?

Welcome to the 50+ club.
It is a real mix of folks in this forum and for the most part the conversation is always polite, supportive, and helpful and never condescending. There are lots of riders with years of experience as well as older folks just starting out. I'm not a long time poster, but in my short time here I haven't seen any real feuds. The Road forum is much more active, but can sometimes get pretty adolescent. Come over here on occasion to relax as well as to offer helpful advice.

50 today? So we can expect the posting of your birthday ride tomorrow. Just in case you haven't followed it- on your age you ride your bithday, so 50 mile ride for your milestone. Only thing is you have to do it in a bikini and eat 3 power bars per hour to get you used to acting your age. Then you have to let us drool over pictures of Irma's pies, so yet another ride coming up to visit that. Oh and you have to post a picture of your bike, so that we can drool over that, unless uou have a wallmart special and then we offer you sympathy and advice on how to upgrade it.

I was going to ride in my Birthday Suit, but my wife said it was in serious need of ironing.
We don't really feud here, as we usually put that off until after our afternoon naps, then can't remember anything about it anyway.

Happy birthday!
I turned 50 this month too, and a new rider since this fall. I ride just about every day to do my "work" but I'm bummed that I haven't lost any weight. My jeans were fitting a little better until this weekend, but barely noticeable. I need help.

Welcome to the "party" '55!! A number of us made it here a little earlier and can hopefully shed some light on "cycling at 50+". It's really a terrific group as you will soon find out.
I think all of us simply enjoy getting out and riding whether it be 5 miles or 100 miles-on a road bike, hybrid, mtn bike or 'bent. The main thing we really enjoy is just being around to be able to "type" about it!!
Some of us find we at the age where we have memory problems so we have to take pictures of our rides and share them with others because we can't remember what we did......We love to see pictures!!

This forum is a great source of information for someone isolated in a generally non-biking community or someone with limits on time preventing joining a bike club.
I so not know where I could have gathered so much help and information so fast.
The spirited dialogs help on focus of what may be real. Reading magazines bombards you with the profit motive. Books give you ONE opinion. There are a bunch of guys on this forum who really want to help. Some of them replied to this thread. So this is my Thanks.

We don't get intense over your frame material, team jerseys (like, do any of us own one?), Campy vs. Shimano, or finger pointing at OCP's--or Freds like DG and GrannyGear. We do celebrate riding (including overcoming handicaps or impediments) personal achievements big or small, and a good slice of pie. Friction shifters are generally welcome.

Hey everyone,
Thanks for the well wishes and I'll be visiting here often. I'm getting ready for my 50 miler right now, it's kind of windy out here today and a little cooler than it's been in Santa Ana, it actually got down into the high 40's last night
but I'll put on some layers and I won't mind getting a little warm on the ride.
Some of you might know me from the road bike side and know that I've just recovered from breaking my pelvic bone on Sep. 24th. I did ride about three weeks ago and was just fine, life seems to have gotten in the way of riding the last three weeks since then so this is the first longer ride in two months. I'll check back in a few hours with a report and maybe some pics.
