Does sloppy robot have a link to that picture?
I'd like to see a larger version of it.
I have heard several stories about why Shimano has discontinued the large flange hubs.
First, they did it to save money.
The low flange hub allows them to make these hubs on machinery that also makes geared bike hubs.
Second, the weight savings of the low flange hubs have more end-user performance value than whatever mechanical advantages the large flange hubs might have provided.
The two reasons above represent speculations.

i don't think that they ever discontinued production and sale of them in japan, but i may be wrong. feel free to correct, but i remember reading something that said that they just no longer export them to america (and other places, presumably).

As far as I've been able to glean, they're only making 36-hole hubs, and rears only in single-sided. So if you want double-sided or any other spoking, you may be paying up soon. I also heard (unconfirmed) that they did one run of hubs with no commitment to make any more, and that this run was bought up instantly by a few distributors (EAI among them). These hubs aren't made by CNC methods; they're apparently made in two pieces that are spun on a lathe together so that the centers fuse to make one finished hub. It's not particularly amenable to large-scale production, and is labor-intensive. American manufacturers have designed their hubs for large-scale CNC manufacturing, but not the old keirin hubs. And since Japan is about to approve carbon disc wheels for parimutuel keirin racing, the demand for these hubs may evaporate rapidly. Definitely get some while you can. I got some -- not at the best prices of a couple years ago, but at least less than $300 -- and have a few extras if someone really needs one. They're double-sided 36-hole, with the NJS stamp. You can probably find some, but if you can't let me know.
