Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How do you position your handlebars?

I was wondering how most roadies position their handlebars. Please feel free to voice your opinion by taking the poll or by posting below.

I've attached photos showing options 1 and 2.

NOTE: Should read HORIZONTAL, not VERTICAL. I'm an idiot.

Shouldn't those read horizontal rather than vertical?

Horizontal drops. Now adays, I ride on the hoods, so maybe I should lift up the bars a little bit.

I was taught that the drops should make an invisible line to the bottom of the seatpost, so I'm half way intbetween those photo's. more or less..

Look just below the top tube - between the bars and the tube

I think the word you were looking for was "horizontal" or parallel to the ground.

Anyways, flat drops are good for sprinters, lets you handle the bars with a straight arm and i've personally found it lets me get the most power to the pedals. Having the hoods up a little higher is nice for longer rides though as it put's you a bit more upright and reduces your reach. You can have both by positioning the brifter where you want on the bar but it may look funny and cause difficulty reaching the brakes and shifter's from the drops.

What is that Rad? Nice looking ride.

I prefer to have my hoods and drops parallell to the ground.

It's my latest project - a 1992 Giordana Spica frame with Campy C-Record group from '88/89.

ideal setup is to have a level top, transitioning smoothly into brifter hoods, and also level drop-bottoms

kinda irks me inside when i see something contrary

Always close to if not parallel drops... I like the two riding posistions, at the bend, and at the hoods...

Wow. Now I see why so many people are more comfortable in the hoods than the drops. I thought I was weird or something, but if the tops of my bars were that horizontal, the drops would be impossible.

I like the hoods horizontal, but instead of completely turning the bars up to get that position, I also raise the levers themselves up a tad so that it's not so noticeable.
