Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Stretching

I had back pain for a number of years. I found a great book and have been able to eliminate almost all of my back pain. Stretching only takes 5 minutes a day, and although I do have some arthritis in my back, I rarely am having problems anymore.

Hydration and Stretching

+1 on the stretching and I have also found that for me staying hydrated helps a lot too.

Strech your back every day. This only takes a few minutes and your back will love you for it. I do maybe four simple stretches per day right before I go to bed; I have not woken up with a sore back in months (soreness everyday used to be the norm).

Full CORE TRAINING will fix that. Plenty of abs, back extensions, side extensions, ball exercise, balance exercise, leg rises, etc.

+1 on stretching and core/ab training. find some stretches that target the psoas as it tends to shorten and contract to protect the lower lumbar area. loosening it up can sometimes provide immediate relief.

As in you have the right size bike, or the stem and saddle positioning have all been taken care of?

Bike fitting refers to a specific process, not choosing the right size frame. It involves the seatpost, saddle, stem, and bars.

If your back only hurts when you ride, then it is probably not anything chronic. I've had surgery for a herniated disk and believe me, you'll know it if you have chronic back pain. I found a back program at my gym that has helped a lot -- weight and stretching machines that focus on back and ab area. Core training basically. You need to have strong abs and surrounding muscles to support the back. But what do I know? Even doctors can't properly diagnose and treat back pain most of the time.

Maybe a more upright positioning would help? Less bending and strain on the back.

Work on stretching and core strength, but also get a good bike fitting done by a professional fitter. Chances are your bike fit is a bit off.

I had back pain that made me have to stop and stretch every 15 miles. I moved the saddle back 5-6mm and it has gone away completely.

I have stretched almost everyday for over 12 years and I am extremely flexible. I just recently spent spent almost 3 months sidelined with a bike injury. Pre-injury I lifted, stretched, worked my core diligently, and I could not get past this injury. BTW, the back injury was due to an ill-fitting bike. After countless orthopod visits, chiro visits, and a little vodoo, a buddy suggested an inversion table. It worked like magic, I have been rehabing carefully and slowly. Last week was my first week at 100+ miles and I should do about 120 this week. I am on the inversion table every other day for about 15 minutes a day. It worked for me.

All of the previous posts are great suggestions; you have to find a routine that helps you. good luck! Don't discount talking to a doc that you trust.
