street fix (cost no object)
what do people consider the dream fixed-gear for street use if cost is not a concern (within reason, obviously). custom frame? material? builder? (near NYC would be good) all those other do-dads.
thanks for any suggestions,

-moderately priced off the rack steel or Al frame(depending on what weather you'll be riding in). Unless you are bizzarely proportioned custom is a waste for a newbies street bike. A moderately priced frame will hold up alot better then a more expensive one.
-cane creek s2(king for bling)
-shimano un-73(phil for bling)
-moderately priced ritchey(or equivalent level ie easton, fsa etc) stem and seatpost.(thomson for bling)
-formula/dtcomp/openpro(phil/dtcomp/deepv for bling
-ergo road drops(nitto steel track drops for bling)
-canecreek scr-5 right hood and actual dummy for the left.(no brakes for bling)
-105 front brake(campy skeleton for bling.)
-sugino rd with tacomp ring(75 for bling.)
-whatever pedals/saddle you prefer.
If you want to go for pure bling
custom nagasawa
araya disks(front and back)
everything else njs.

80's Colnago track bike, full campy, clement Criterium sew ups.
Sold one a couple of years ago (not full campy) for $750. It was on consignemt at a bike shop that specialized in BMX doo doo. Paid $125 for it, it had been ridden at most a dozen times.
Way too big a frame for me.

"cost no object"......first of all, i hate you.
to answer your question, i would get a custom built up by vanilla. hubs would be phils, laced to mavics or velocitys. thomson stem and seatpost. king headset, brooks swift titanium rail saddle and brooks bar tape. i'm not super passionate about the rest, but if cost was no object, they'd be nice for sure.
edit: i just realized that the thomson stem and seatpost is silly since vanilla makes the most awesome stems i've ever seen. don't they also make seatposts? i'm too lazy to check. also, if not a vanilla, a jonny cycles would be my second choice.

I'm picking RAL codes for my dream bike right now. I decided that there is no time like the present, and yes, a custom bike is worth as much as a small car to me.
And yes, my dream bike will be fixed. I'm trying to get a rear disc fixed hub, then it would be perfect.
A moderately priced frame will hold up better than a more expensive one? Well that depends, now doesn't it?
Every tube will be custom on my bike. The bars will be welded to the forks.Good luck on trying to find a real custom like that in an LBS.
Congrats on your project! This is a really exciting process, I love it. It really gives me something to look forward to...

But seriously, I will have the same conundrum a man with a custom Ferrari has...
"Nice day out...do I take the Ferrari? Nah, I might dent a fender...."
Sheeet. I'm taking the Ferrari, homeboy. Vehicles are for driving, not fretting over!

i've been having naughty thoughts about the following:
frame:
components:
it would be... strange.
fsnl
sparky
frame:
- softride beam [i know some of you are going to wretch at that one]
- lattice type frame [like moultons], maybe even stainless steel?
- tabs for discs, mounts for v-brakes, drilled for calipers
- tabs for racks front and rear
- sliding vertical dropouts [like on one], long enough so that a 19mm tyre touches the bb when it's fully forward, but there's enough space to fit a 38mm tyre or bigger.
components:
- campagnolo 07 cranks/bb
- royce hubs, nimble horse/fly rims, 32x3cross sapim cx-ray spokes, tubulars
- 130mm hubs front and rear?
- avid ball bearing 7 cable disc brakes
- chris king headset
- adjustable [reach/angle] stem with removable face, nitto 021 or 3t moscow bullhorns, campagnolo carbon brake levers
- tune speedneedle/ax lightness/m2racer saddle
it would be... strange.
fsnl
sparky

I also don't understand the bars welded to fork thing. You should post a diagram.

so is the part you hold equivalent in hieght/orientation to drops, hoods, flat bars, mustache? The whole thing just seems either heavy, flexy as **** or both. Whimsical maybe.

Whimsical? Absolutely. But practical. The design came from the designer's solution to where to put your feet when you "coast" on a fixed gear. Voila--the handlebars double as a footrest. Not that I will use them that way. I find them extremely elegant.
For more on the theory, read the works of Ghyka. You may learn something you don't already know.
The idea of math, science, art, and motion coming together between my legs is exciting, to say the least.
