They should of just made an oversized bar end shifter, I would think it would work better.

It's a speed modulator, not a brake. IIRC you actually set the amount of brake like a friction shifter, you don't pull it. It's for time trials.

those things are total crap, no braking power is applied, nashbar was selling them for way cheap a couple of months ago, but the people who bought them just used them as buttplugs

I just keep two cork pads (as not to mess up my non-machined deep Vs) cuffed up in my capri pants, pull em out when needed, lean over the bars one-footed style, apply brake pressure with said cork pads....but making it look like I'm lighting an unfiltered/hand rolled cigarette.

Permission to copy your squirrel technique. Granted I'll have to catch them initially, but I'll have so much pelt leftover...

they aren't supposed to actually stop you, just slow you down when your going into a turn or down a hill.

Speed modulator for TT's... sounds like a winner idea. We'll just torque it to the max for Tyler Hamilton because of *certain considerations* etc. and we have a level playing field!

I use grip-shifters as brake levers... perfectly indexed braking.

I don't think thats how it works. You never really slow down for long distances in tts or tris.

Tandems do use a regular bar end shifter to set a constant braking sometimes though.

From Nashbar's Website...

"Eek precious tenths of a second off your next time trial by sporting a set of these ultra aero brake levers. These levers are super aero, but leave a little to be desired as far as stopping power goes, but they can scrub off speed to set up for your next tight turn or slow you down after crossing the finish line. Ultra low profile design slices through the air. Return spring positively snaps levers back to their aero position when you’re not slowing. Aircraft aluminum construction. Fits most standard bullhorn/wing bars. 2.5mm set-screw mounting design means these are for use on metal handlebars only. Brake cables and housing included."

That was really necessary huh?

These brakes have been brought up several times on the road cycling forum (which I used to frequent). They were described as such. Someone even mentioned the phrase "set it and forget it" because they are meant for downhill courses and whatnot. The description on Nashbar's site seems slightly contradictory but perhaps not (friction engages the harder you brake?).

That might be where the confusion began...it makes more sense that people thought they were tandem brakes (these tandems have drum brakes don't they?).

I haven't used these brakes (nor anyone else in this thread) so we're all just being speculative.

I'd hope... if you were to "set and forget" a V or caliper brake, like that, it would quickly fade, heat the crap out of your rim, and otherwise probably wreck your day.

Why would you even want to set the brake permanently in a TT?

I have held these "brakes" in my hand. They are NOT "set and forget", they do indeed snap back and release the braking pressure when you let go.

Oh, and they are awful.

They answer a question that nobody asked.
They are a solution looking for a problem.
