Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Paging Dr. Pete...

I got bitten by a spider on the top of my thigh. I've been to my Doc and he gave me Prednisone and an antibiotic. Here's the kicker...
We're going to the mountains on Wednesday for a metric. Will the antibiotics and/or the 'roids bother me terribly on the bike?

Thanks- M

Did you...uhm...bother to ask your own personal physician for his advice after he/she prescribed the meds?

No offense to DP, but if I were searching for medical advice, Bike Forums isn't necessarily the place I would seek out.

Off the record, the 'roids will enhance your performance.
(However, now you can never run for political office unless you immediately and vehemently protest my statement.)

Love that avatar BTW.

I was bitten by a spider (on top of thigh!) last week, and stung by a wasp on the knee of the same leg over the weekend. You gotta cowboy up on these things and just go ride your bike. Drugs are for wussy.

At least that's what my wife (BS Pharmacy, MS Drug Information Science, PharmD) tells me.

A doctor is at a party and runs into his lawyer friend. The lawyer asks him how he is enjoying the party. The doctor replies "it's a good party, but I can't enjoy myself. Every time I turn around someone asks me another medical question. I just wish I could leave my work back at my practice." The lawyer responds "I know exactly how you feel. Just do what I do. The next time someone asks you a work-related question, answer it, but then send the guy a bill. Pretty soon the word will get around, and people will leave you alone". The doctor says "What a great idea! I'll try it." The next day the doctor goes to the mailbox and finds a bill from the lawyer.

I'm not a Doctor, but I play one on BikeForums.

Pop those pills and keep on cycling. You'll be fine. Unless you aren't. Now turn your head and cough, please.

Thanks for the dumbass comment. I'm asking Dr. Pete because he's a cyclist AND a Doctor. My Doc is about 50...years old and pounds overweight. He said I should be fine, but I still wanted DP's opinion.

Your opinion is little more than the creamy splooge they put in Oatmeal Creme Pies...

I'll keep that in mind next time a friend asks for computer advice.

Boy, with all these Dr. Pete questions, someone needs to set up some fees for the good doc.

Trust me, you don't...

It looks like I got caught in a drive-by...

Snick-He said he wrote the Prednisone 'scrip as a substitute for a cortisone shot. I would have paid for both, given the opportunity...

I just dozed off on the couch a minute ago and had a dream that little black spiders hatched out of my leg...(shiver)

Edit-pic added

Keep an eye on it. Depending on the spider, these bites can sometimes form little abscesses that need to be incised and drained, and there's no antibiotic or steroid that can fix that.

If the pain/redness/etc. doesn't start to go away quickly, see your doc again.

If you haven't had any bad reactions to the steroids yet, it's unlikely that you will, but I'd still say take it easy while you're taking meds... Stay well-nourished and hydrated and all should be well.
