My summer vacation with way too many pics - 56K warning
Just got back from a week on Lake Namekagon in the Chequamegon (SHO-WAH-MA-GON) National Forest, about 35 miles NE of Hayward WI. I rode every day except Tuesday, rain in the morning followed by sustained 40 mph winds and 60 mph gusts.
There is a road race there, https://www.firehouse50.org/sitenew/ , and a mountain race, https://www.cheqfattire.com/ . There are very few flats but the hills are small. The routeslip I made of the Firehouse 50 has 3200 feet of climbing over 50 (duh) miles. I did that route once, I rode other routes on other days. Not a lot climbing but not flat like Illinois.
Speaking of Illinois, I kept up a good FIB reputation for our northern neighbors when I crossed the cheddar border: I drove too fast, tailgated, cut cars off, never used the directionals and in public I was drunk and loud.
Here are some pictures of the roads.
The roads had little to no traffic. If I was on a "busy" road, the shoulder was wide enough fo two bikes.
The new bridge opened on Thursday night.
I would get a refreshing swim at the end of every ride.
Here's the cabin, I have been going there since I was 4.

This is where Lake Namekagon empties into the Namekagon River.
A typical sign up there, it tells you which way to go for each house.
It's hard to tell but that is a Hamm's beer sign. Nothing says north woods like Hamm's beer in a can.
Edit: a couple of Hamm's diddies on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc7HoWEk6y8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zYzq...elated&search=
If you look into the woods, it pretty much looks like this.
This is a sign at the Quik-E-Mart in Drummond. It is in order of importance, except the beer and liquor should bump the groceries.
Smokey the Bear!!!!!
Two churches, one is Methodist the other I think is Lutheran. They probably rumble after services on Sundays.
I love the George Jetson aesthetic of the 1950s.
If my kit matches, is this mailbox OCP?
The area is on the Great Divide. Rain to the north goes to the Atlantic and rain to the south goes to the Gulf. This is going south out of Grandview, a 3-mile climb but only 500-600 feet of elevation gain.

Mama and baby deer crossing the road.
This one wasn't as lucky.
A fox just trotted past me on the road.
A Great Blue Heron.
A mama Loon on her nest.
A family of Loons.
A baby Bald Eagle. Still too young to fly from the nest. Sorry, no pictures of the parents.
And finally, the obligatory camera-on-the-bars upshot of me.

I had forgotten how beautiful Wisconsin is in the summer! When I lived just north of Green Bay, we used to drive up into the north woods just to wander around. Stupid me, I never took my bike! We did it in the winter as well, BRRRRR!
I wish I had the time to go up again and spend a couple of weeks in the woods. Maybe when I win the lottery.

Looks like some nice riding. I might have to go check it out myself.

Summer vacation? What the hell is that?
You're either from Europe, are a teacher, or a student I take it?
Nice pics BTW. Not a single cage in sight.

We have a cabing about 30 minute (drive) south of Hayward and last weekend we headed into the city to do some silly toursity crap we haven't done there in 8 years... On the drive riding in the back seat of my Mom's SUV I was looking at the roads and I kept saying "Hey dad this would be a fun climb" and "dont you wish you had your bike right now"
Long story short my mom, my dad, and my girlfriend all got sick of that **** and threatened to leave me in Hayward and said they would mail my bike...
Some day Ill run up there and ride the roads... Little traffic, lots of wildlife and wonderful climbs.
Good vacation spot.
p.s. I love the smokey the bear fire signs :-)
