Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Filling water bottle with Coins? Will it work?

I was thinking about weighted vests and ankle weights to help me with resistance training and such. Filling the water bottle method won't put strain on your back or body, so i was thinking of doing this method. I was just wondering, do you get good gains from doing this? I already know i can just push a bigger gear, but I kind of look at this like a fixed gear bike, where you can't change your gearing even if you wanted to. Same with the adding weight to the bike. I can't take the weight out if i wanted to. Anyway I'm just asking if anyone has done something like this and what their results were. thanks

Just do what I did yesterday, and climb anything under a 8% grade in the big ring. Granted, I have a 50T ring so it's a bit easier than a 53T . Good workout, and may require a bit of standing.

Ya my 53 can be a ball buster on large climbs. But the only thing I don't like about this method is that I can chicken out and go down a cog or 2 even though i try to stay in that gear, where as if i had the coin filled bottle I have no choice but to haul it up the hill.

Just tighten your brakes so they're always rubbing. Much more resistance than a bottle of coins. And adjustable.

i know botto recommended that idea to someone a while ago, but i think it was for a different reason. just remember that adding weight to the bike will change everything about it, like how it handles when you go down the other side of a climb, and so forth...

This will wear down the rims and brake pads though.

Adding weight to your bike would not really be noticeable, except when you are climbing a mountain. One of my bikes has three water bottle clips, so I start a long ride with 60 ounces of water, and come back with empty bottles. I can't tell whether the bottles are full or empty while I'm riding. My legs can't feel any difference between pushing 205 pounds (bottles empty) or 209 pounds (bottles full).

The only time adding weight gave me a better workout was when I was pulling my young nephew in a trailer. That was a good workout, pulling forty extra pounds of weight. An extra forty pounds makes you work harder.

It's a bad idea. Just ride up the hill faster if you want a harder workout.

The only advantage to a water bottle full of coins is that you'll always have snack money.

too much weight in the water bottle could possible cause frame damage, especially if a carbon frame. they aren't exactly designed to handle a 2-5# "water bottle".

What about a Camel Bak filled with weights?

Hmmm, a water bottle braze on is designed to handle a certain amount of stress. Need I say more?

I didn't have enough coins to fill the bottle, so I used sand. It was only a couple of pounds though. I need something that is very dense and heavy.

Go take a scwinn cruiser up the mountain if you want weight resistance!

Tie a rope around your seatpost and a 50lbs weight on the other end. Drag that sucker up the hill.

Try big-ringing as many climbs as possible. Really improved my fitness this year.

Works great man!....But whats even better is ball bearings. That way you still have a little room in the bottle for water, and if you are having trouble dropping the competion, you just sprinkle out half a bottle of ball bearings on the road...... Problem solved.

A friend of mine loves to go out and skate while a ride my bike. On the way home he grabs onto my seat bag and I tow him up the hills on his skateboard. Talk about a workout.

Ryan, how much do you weigh? I'm 5'7" 135 lbs and I really don't feel a big difference either when I finish drinking a couple bottles.

It was rumored after a long climb, lightweight climbers would grab shot filled water bottles from the team car to enhance their speed on the way downhill.

I tried filling the bottle with marbles and it's about the same weight as the sand filled one. I don't think a couple pounds will make a difference. Or will it?
