Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I saw Fred this weekend...and yes he does ride a Cervelo

Ok so Sunday was the annual Lancaster Covered Bridge Metric in sunny Lancaster PA. A few of us (less this year than in the past) get together each year for this ride and a good time is had by all. As with any time you get ~3000 cyclists together FRED will make an appearance or tow...hell maybe I am a total FRED but this guy took top honors this weekend.

We called him Jens because we just knew it had to be Jens Voigt...but then it hit us that if it really was Jens he would be a lot thinner, faster and probably wouldn't be at a social ride in South Eastern (not central ) PA. So this was the only photo I got of him...I didn't think to ask if he would pose in front of his bike...maybe he would but I am not sure he would have gotten the joke.

SO lets cover what we see here. This guy is wearing the FULL CSC 2008 kit: Jersey, Bibs, SOCKS, GLOVES, he has the appropriate Red and Black Bell Sweep R helmet (see it hung professionally on the bike) and of course he has the bike. Cervelo Soloist WITH the Zipp 404s. It was truly stunning to behold. Now I generally don't care what someone wears...go for it wear a team jersey but this guy was totally over the top. Sadly he was sitting along the road exhausted with about 3 miles to go in the ride...his buddy (also in CSC kit but older and didn't have the gloves, socks or bike) hadn't waited for him. I just cried for Jens as I past.

...or time for a "natural break"...

So, Grasschopper, I guess it really isn't about the bike.

BTW...was he using red Speedplay Zeros?

According to your description, wouldn't he be an OCP rather than a Fred?

So?

I saw a dude with a Cervélo P2C TT bike...with no shirt (and extra flab, actually). I also ran into a guy with full Livestrong kit on an old Raleigh that I dropped on the Brooklyn Bridge...

At least they're riding...and aren't stupid on their bike.

Something dawned on me on the drive to work...that isn't the CSC/Saxo Bank Kit but rather the early 08 kit...and the bike should be an SLC-SL.

I don't think this guy was really on the CSC team.

Judging by the look on his face while he was sitting there next to the road I am not so sure he had a good time. I hope he didn't SAG in from where he was sitting...seriously only had 3 miles to go and only one teeny tiny rise (not even really a climb).

But yes that is the point...I have just never seen anyone take it to this level before. Sure I have seen people with Disco/Postal kit...but never the full deal all the way down to the socks, gloves, helmet, $$$$ wheels and even the CSC edition speedplay pedals. It was just so far over the top...I wondered if he had the CSC sheet set for his bunkbeds.

Well yesterday I rode this bike:

I wore the jersey of my LBS - The Bicycle Shop here in State College and my black Assos FI Mille bibs. Ridicule away.

I didn't say he was fat...I certainly have no room to talk there...just that I thought Jens was a lot thinner.
