The Future of DA (post 7900)
So, do any of you know what is expected to come out next and when? Is Shimano planning to release a lighter version of the Di2? Replace the current 7900 with a full electronic 7900? What is the gossip?
(This from someone who is looking for what to expect when the warranty on his current 7800 DA runs out. And, yes, I've already had to use it.)

Who knows, but my guess is 7900 will be around for several years, just as the 7800 has been. Whatever comes out next, it will cost more than the 7900!

I must stay I do like the new 7900 group, but I am rather amazed they did away with any shifter indicator for the rear cassette. I really would rather know if I have another gear or two left when I'm climbing without having to glance down, but glance down I must.

You can just ride like me and go for the shift and then feel that moment of "oh crap" when you realize you're at the end.

What's worse is when you're grinding along, dying, and you say to yourself 'I'll just go to the little ring', and then you realize, you are already IN the little ring. Those are the F Me moments of cycling.

So a 7 line computer like the Garmin will have:
speed
cadence
distance
HR
elevation
temperature
physical gear (39x15 for example)
gear in inches
gain

You can get the gear indictor on the Flight Deck but frankly the whole installation process is too much of a pain in the ass. Maybe in the future. I'd like to see one in person.

Hmmmm.... I installed my FD in like 10 mins. As long as you know how to redo your bartape I don't see any problems.....

I'm still running 7700, and I have a rule that I only upgrade in powers of ten. So I'm holding out for DA-77k. Shouldn't be long.

a sub 200gram 12 speed internal hub. Honestly, I'm convinced Shimano is dying to make their Internal shifting hub race worthy, and maybe now with electronics, it might be feasible.

It's confusing. But that's consistent with everything about how Shimano is handling this new groupo. They do suck. But the D.A. stuff is great.

What I do think is the future is an internal transmission in the BB shell coupled to a single speed rear wheel. Wheels will be strong and light, plus easy changes in the rear (if you use a chain tensioner instead of fork ends)

i thought gear indicators were for newbs? easier to check the cassette than to read that tiny lil gauge. plus that thing prolly weighs a lot.

This thread had me scared for a minute. I literally just dropped some serious coinage on the 7900 group about 4 hours ago.

I have the DA group from 2005 (whatever that one was) and it has an inline gear indicator cylinder. IMO easier to see than the one on the shifters since it's closer to the center of view.

I plan to buy a new bike over the summer. And Sram red on an Addict looks very enticing. But, interestingly enough, one can get the 'next level down' Addict for about $1000 less with DA7900.
Is Shimano worried about this? It seems not. And perhaps they should not be. In fact, Mark Cavendish, who rides an Addict, has Di2 on his bike. And, IMO, DA cassettes are still a step above (well, perhaps two steps) Sram Red cassettes. But this doesn't mean that I couldn't use DA cassettes with the Sram grouppo.
Have any of you come back to DA from Sram Red because of the 7900 group?
