Wife asks "why do you need another bike?"

I commute on an Allez and needed a bike for winter so bought a Tricross with fenders/rack.

So wife pops the question and I tell her I need the fenders for when it's raining so I dont get wet.
She replied "Duh, the rain falls from the sky!"

Just ask her why she needs a new pair of shoes when she has shoes already.

Although I'd cut her some slack on the rain vs. road spray thing...I know lots of cyclists on bike forums who don't get the difference between water from the sky and grimy dirty water from the road.

Because it's there.

Because there aren't any 12 step programs for cyclists.

Because I don't have any red ones yet.

......... others?

Best answer yet. Several of the others seem needlessly confrontational and dismissive.

Yeah, it's his wife. Smart comebacks probably not the best way to go. the 'vette comment or asking about shoe purchases (in the right tone of voice) seems like the best approach, depending on her own tendancies.

I'm a bit baffled by this kind of a mixed marriage. In my family, it's mostly it's my wife bugging me to set aside enough money to buy her a new bike.

^ In case anyone was confused about whether or not this is a good forum on which to seek marital advice.

Honestly, most people in this country get by with one bike. We're the oddballs. You could stick fenders on the Allez if you really wanted to or sell it and use the Tricross for everything.

It's a valid question and the answer is that you don't NEED one. You just want one.

It's really interesting how different couples handle money and purchases, - especially discretionary ones.

Ain't that the truth.

My wife's questions about why I need another bike would definitely come well BEFORE I drop the cash on one.

Even better is to have a wife who rides & appreciates lugged custom steel frames, folding bikes, racing wheels, & Brooks saddles

Because bikes are just like shoes: some are for running (race bike), some are for shopping (utility bike), some are for hiking (Mountain Bike), some are for a night out on the town (cruiser), some are for when the weather is bad (winter commuter), some are for traveling (touring bike), some are for the commute to work (folder), some are for playing (polo bike), some are for the night out with the guys (cyclocross bike)

Should've gotten her involved early... ask her what color you should get and she'll forget to ask why you even need them in the first place.
