Conti Gator Skins with skids???
i've head conti's gator skins work wonders for skidding. you can skid stop as much as you want and long as u want, and they will be fine, and will hold up for a very long time...just wondering if any of these stories are true before i spend 50 bucks on one tire.
or would i rather be better off buying cheap 10 dollar tires and skidding on them til the rubber comes off and just replace them with another 10 dollar tire 5 times to equal the cost of 1 gator skin?

If you don't like money and want to get rid of the nasty stuff out of your wallet as quickly as possible then go ahead and skid on expensive tyres.

gatorskins do last a long time... Mine has lasted longer than any other tire that I've skidded on. I've had it on now for about 4 months, and I skid semi-frequently.
The only thing I don't like about them is that they don't actually stop you that well. If you just want to skid across an entire parking lot, they are great. BUT, if you are in an emergency and need to bust a quick skid to stop, they aren't that good. Just a heads up, if you are brakeless you might wnat something else, IMO.
As far as money vs. time, I think that you are probably better off getting something cheaper. Recently I tried out Panaracer Messenger which is an amazing tire. Got 2 of them for free, and they stop me much faster than the gatorskin. Go to your LBS and ask if they have any crap tires lying around. A lot of people get Bontrager, etc doing this.

I run a $10 in the front, and Gatorskins (25s) in back...I haven't ran though it yet, n 6 months and I skip stop a fair amount. I don't do long skids too much, they're unnecessary and wear tires out.
it has a lot to do with skid patches, of which I have 17 of. some weird gear ratios will give you 3 or less, and the dreaded 39x13 which is 1 skid patch.

2) Get off the seat and a little forward, now, try to skid.
3) as your tire loses contact with the ground, pedal forward just a little, so your tires has traction again
if you do step #3 right, your pedals will stay in pretty much the same place, and you'll just slow down or stop.
btws, to do this you need foot retention, if you don't already. really, to ride fixed you need foot retention.

1) DON'T go balls to stem. this isn't a long skid, you're trying to stop or at least slow down.

Soma everwears will last longer than you would like. The tread is so thick that they square-off way before you make it down to the fibers. The problem is that they get inefficient and slow as hell when they square off.

here's how i skip stop, with either L or R pedals at 9 and 3 or 3 and 9, i hop up the rear just enough to lock my rear tire in mid air and as it comes down it slightly skids and you slow down.
not sure if im doing it right but it stops me

I run through cheap tires. Skidding around corners is too much fun to not do. If I wanted to stop with brakes, I'd ride a singlespeed. Not that I don't have and use the brake, but in most situations it just feels more natural to skid.

you can find them for $30

Brake pads are $10 each? I bought a pair for like $7 not too long ago.... Or did you mean each pair? Yeah that's probably it... whatever.
But yeah, just use your brake(s).
