I guess it's kinda neat to have options.
I just wasn't in the mood to share a lane. Ever get like that? I was already suited; showered & stretched. Grrrr

If I was already on the pool deck I'd suck it up. No point in wasting all that prep time.

I don't care much for lane sharing either...but I might have hung out a few minutes to see if one opened up. That has happened to me at least once.
It is great to be in a sport where we have options.

We have a four lane pool and there were 7 people swimming. OK, two were swimming and three were attempting to continually move from one end to the other and two were more talking than swimming.
I don't mind sharing lanes if the swimmer in my lane pays attention and can swim in a somewhat straight line.

I always want to strangle people when I see them doing waterobics or some sort of wacky drills in the "fast lane" making everyone fast and slow crowd into the other lanes.

Swim the first few lengths in an enthusiastic manner, maybe a bit of butterfly too, and see if a couple of lane-sharers are ´persuaded´to leave.

Well my options are limited here in Manhattan. I have a 4 lane 13M pool, so if you happen to get in a lane then you jump right in. It's rare that I find myself flip turning in a lane by myself but when i do, I take full advantage. I am about to seek out a new pool which is really out of the way for me to get home but I think that'll make it all the better for me to go since most won't go out of their way and hope that it's empty most of the time.

I remember I had to share a lane with a guy doing a freestyle with a recovery arm swing like a butterfly stroke. He hardly bent his elbow and his arms were inches off the water. He swim well, but I was afraid of being whacked in the head if we passed each other. My arm already whacked his.

I got my 1500 meters in today. Had the whole pool to myself, no distractions.

Theres a guy in my pool who swims "freestyle" but when he takes a breath he basically flips over and his entire upper body comes out of the water and his next stroke starts with his back going into the water, then he rolls left takes a stroke and flips back right and does it over again.
Its the craziest thing I've ever seen, he makes huge splashes and has a hard time seeing other people in the lane... I always avoid his lane, I will swim with the waterobics morons before I swim near him, might get clocked in the head!

definitely been smashed in the face, by my friend no less, sharing a lane. I try and make a big deal and the lane sharer usually leaves quickly

I´ll clarify - I would never swim in a dangerous manner, down the centre of the lane etc. or with a ´swinging´arm.
If there are a couple of slow breaststrokers in the lane, though, and there´s space elsewhere in the pool, well then it´s game on with a bit of thrashy freestyle before settling down to my perfect TI stroke*
*might have exaggerated that last bit
