Brutal.Brutal,Brutal

That is all I can say for the ride on GMR yesterday(Wednesday). The temp on the way up was bearable, but the ride down was just BRUTAL. Just saying it was COLD does not do it justice. Everyone that rides GMR knows where the short downhill is about a mile below the shack. What would have been puddles on the side of the road if it had been warmer were solid ice. Reminded me more of giant ice cubes than anything else. Outside of the cold temps, the ride was great. Caltrans was running trucks up and down the road with blades, keeping rocks and things off the road. It was for the most part very clean and dry. Can't wait for the temps to go up just a little though. This was the third straight time coming down was like what riding in most parts of the country in December must feel like. Exactly 2 weeks ago Mr. Beanz and I were up the same road and it was almost 80. What a difference 2 short weeks can make.

Hi,

I road up there last Saturday and it was cold too. There was a little water running across the road about a mile before the Cow Saddle and it was still icy at about 10AM. I had enough clothes on for the descent that I felt like the little brother in A Christmas Story and I was still cold.

I was up there Wednesday as well. I went up 39 and past Camp Williams and then up and over GMR into Glendora. It wasn't as bad as I expected. I thought it was worse coming down 39 from the 2 on Saturday.

I was headed down right around 3. I have a white bike. I had a yellow and blue jacket on (part of why I was warm). It could have been me, I was going pretty good because I thought I was going to be late to meet my teammate.

Well it is obvious that you know what you are doing on a bike where as I am up there for the fun of it and exercise. All in all, even with as cold as it was, it was another great day up in the hills. For me it is mainly an extension of mountain climbing and hiking. Another way to enjoy oneself outdoors. The pic is from the summit of Mt. Shasta this past summer.

Old skool....Liege-Bastogne-Leige...1980:

"They weren't, but they soon were because snow dropped from the sky just before the turn. It fell from the sky so fast that within minutes there was nothing to see but a white road, white air. A Dutch rider called Gerard Keulers broke away and stayed away for 100 kilometres solely because he thought he'd stay warmer that way. Behind him, 50 riders climbed off. The giant Frenchman, Gérard Saint, stopped to pee on his hands to bring them back to life."
