Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Get your laughs in...

My pedals failed today. In a group I my pedal froze up and although I spent about 10-15 seconds trying, I was not able to unclip and fell over. Ultimately I had to take my shoes off to get off my bike when I got home.

I think someone got a picture of it

Actually I never said that. I said I may fall, I don't know the future.

I still don't believe that it is inevetible, and this was a mechanical failure. My shoes are still attached to my bike, I can't get them off.

Ha!

Why can't you get the shoes off? Cleat failure or something? In both shoes?

Sounds kinda painful. Not like your the first to keel over. I take a little boat ride to cross the Willamette river. Let's me off at the bottom of a 20+ % hill. I slipped out of my pedal, wacked my nads and almost crahed today. Fun stuff.

Yes, cleats are frozen. I was actually able to pry one off, the other is still on.

There was a big huge crash earlier on the group ride and they may have gotten fouled up walking around in the dirt.

Ah okay I see. I've never had issues getting out, but when riding in the snow/ice I have had the look cleats pack with ice and not let me clip in.

so we have four types of riders:

1: those who fall because they don't remember to unclip
2: those who will fall because they don't remember to unclip
3: those who will lie about falling because they don't remember to unclip
4: umd (also known as those who have mechanicals)

I'm still a 2

Huh, the plastic that holds the spring back is broken. doh.

The other side must just very stiff, I don't usually unclip that side.

That would be one hell of a coincidence for them both to fail in the same manner on the same ride. Must have gotten gunked up or something like you said. Sounds like you and your bike are ok so it's all good. Now who has those pics?!?!?

Edit: I see you figured out what was wrong. How could you never unclip one side? Do you never get off your bike?

I get what you are saying, because I unclip my right foot only at stoplights etc. But don't you at least still unclip the other side at least *once* per ride, at the end?

I almost never unclip the left side during a ride. At the end of rides I always unclip my right side, swing my leg around and step off with my whole body weight. I guess I just never noticed how stiff the left side was because of that. But that's why I was still able to pry the left side off, while I had to literally disassemble the right cleat to get it off. The plastic part that broke was the ramp that lifts the pedal body off of the spring.

My one and only fall on a road bike due to not unclipping was a 4.
D*)% Wellgo simulated SPDs allowed me to clip in, but when I stopped they liked my cleats so much, they wouldn't let go. Crash.

Do you think it could be fixed or are you gonna have to buy a new one?

FWIW I won't be laughing at you, I only fell one time, on my MTB, but it sucks.

I'll need new cleats, but I have spares. It was going to be time for new ones soon anyway.

I've done it once... and that was enough. Of course at least 15 people that I know saw me do it.

I worry about a cleat bolt coming loose one day and doing a repeat performance.

I still don't consider a mechanical failure the same as simply forgetting to unclip.
