Its one if the islands in the San Juan island chain in Washington state.

Somebody let you camp in their yard? Pass their name along, especially if they reside on the farther side of the island

Nice. I've cycled the San Juans years ago when I did the Trek Tri-Island. What a beautiful place to ride. Wish I lived closer.

Beautiful! I've never been on Lopez or Shaw. I have spent a lot of time on San Juan and Orcas though. I love it out there. I have yet to cycle any of the islands. I have to do that in the spring or summer next year.

Yeah, a really cool couple let my girlfriend and I camp in thier yard. We made a wrong turn looking for Spencer Spit State park and ended up on Port Stanley Road which runs along
Swifts Bay. We stopped and asked directions to the park and the couple offered to let us set up in thier back yard. We arrived on Lopez late in the day and it was already getting dark(and cold) so we gladly accepted. On top of that, they invited us to eat with them, so we were treated to salmon, asparagus and and a fine merlot. Also, they had an outside shower available for us that was steaming hot and truly luxurious. Out of respect for thier privacy, I can't give any more details as to the identity or the location of two very gracious people. All in all, it was one of the best nights of a 95 day tour.

I was just there for 3 days in August; I posted this thread in the 50+ forum (just fyi, not trying to diver this thread):

Lopez really seemed the most laid-back in terms of cycling (though I think Shaw Island, though smaller, is even sleepier). We did the climb up Mt. Constitution on Orcas Island and that was a very challenging climb -- I think the actual main part of the climb was only about 5 miles long but it was *steep.*
Lonely Planet (or somewhere?) just named the San Juans as one of the top 10 cycling destinations in the world. I think it's impossible to know whether that's the right judgement for everyone, but it's a pretty nice place to ride a bike. Since all you can do is ride around in circles you aren't so driven to make huge miles every day!
