Hey all. I just uploaded a time lapse video I made during my pacific coast bike tour this last september. The camera was mounted in my front basket. I would do it differently if I had the chance, but hopefully it gets some of yall excited about getting on the road. Especially in the cold wet clutches of winter. Peace!

The on-the-road shots were just too fast for me to appreciate, but the ocean, sky and star sections were beautiful.

Yeah, my camera has an "interval shooting" mode, where you can tell it how often to take a picture, and for how long. most of the pictures were 3-5 seconds apart, and you see them in the video at a rate of about... 24-30 per second. i agree thats its too fast, but its only a fraction of my pictures, and i only took pictures of a fraction of the bike tour. i just wanted to cram in as much as possible, without getting boring. trust me, i have like 20 minutes of just the redwoods, and the trees all begin to look the same when youre seeing hundreds a second. anyways, thanks for the comments. I'd like to make a better video next time. and cheers to the vonnegut fans! poo-tee-weet?

Fewer pictures, lingering more on each picture. Interspersing something like your star and sky sections at a high rate would be cool.

yeah the mural bit is really choppy. i should have cut out about half the frames, or even more. I still could, but im pretty sick of looking at it myself. this was my first time using video editing software of any kind, so it took me about a week to get to where it is, believe it or not. i pretty much hate using computers, so im not going to spend another second on it. someday i might try again, but do things different on the camera end, and try to spend less time on the computer end trying to make it look good. the original goal was to condense 1000 miles into 1000 seconds or something thereabout, but i changed my focus when i realized that from a fixed camera 2 feet above the ground, all thousand miles look just about the same. and you cant even see above the guard rail! anyways it was my first time taking a camera on tour, but hopefully next time ill do a better job of capturing the feeling.

started at my back porch in olympia washington, and finished in san fransisco. it is the only touring route i have ever done, but this was the third time riding it for me, and definitely not the last. it just keeps getting better and better. maybe next time i will make it past the bay.

Nice! How tough is that route? I suppose I have driven most of it. But it has been a while. I have to be careful what I put my heart through though. I mean I can ride and all that, but I am not int he top quartile.

Can you give us more info on what camera you used..and how did you deal with the battery life? Carry lots of spares? I think my old Canon had a hack to do this but never thought to do it like that.

while I too need a tylenol now, ribbing aside, nice work and takes me back to that trip. Makes me want to do it again someday. There was some in-car stuff at teh beginning no? certain I saw some reflections.
I shot b+w on that trip, which wasnt as interesting as other trips I did in B+W (yes, with those funny odd metal cannisters with plasticy stuff inside that had to be dipped in D-76 or T-Max in the dark)

I thought the speed on the road was nice but i'm not an expert on time lapse videos.

n3vqh- its a nikon d5000-about 500bones refurbed. battery life was definitely the biggest hassle-i think i could get between 1500-2000 shots per battery. which, depending on my rate would last me a couple hours. memory cards were a little less of a pain, since they are smaller, lighter, and cheaper.

djb- the second bit with the sunrise was from the amtrak ride back north. somewhere in southern oregon i believe.

kayakdiver- unfortunately i was solo and never really took the camera off my bike, so i dont have a good picture of me or my rig. but i rode a black bike with black panniers. lots of reflective bits. i think i went from about sep 15-oct 5? or therabouts. it was rainy for all of oregon.

too bad for the rain. I did that trip in June I think and was pretty lucky all in all for rain. You know 1500-2000 shots per battery is still pretty darn good you know, that really is a hell of a lot of shots per charge. I imagine it uses the EL-N or whatever the smaller ones are. Its great now how memory cards are so cheap now compared to before. Its amazing to think that we used 256meg cards and a 512 was huge, and they cost something like 300 bucks....

You know, if that body held up from all the vibrations I am impressed.

again, this was a great project and kudos to you for doing it, I will remember the waves synced with the beat, and the trees going by going by going by, very much how I remember it.
