Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? getting frustrated

I got some used schwalbe marathon plus tires from a friend at the lbs and I just can't get them onto my rim. I have one side on but I can't get the other side to get hooked in the inside of the rim. It's a dp18 and the tires are only 28's. Any tips or anything?

Get it close and start pumping. If it doesn't seat once you've got 80 psi in it, push on the tire perpendicular to the wheel and it should pop on.

That's a good way to blow up a tube. If the tube is pinched under the tire, it'll probably explode once you get that much pressure in it. If the tire is on the rim but the bead just isn't seated, put like 10-20 psi in and work it around. Some tires are just a pain.

These must be Single Speed or Fixed Gear tires, because that's the only reason I can imagine you'd post this here instead of in the Mechanics forum

...that's why it's there.

If at first you don't succeed, try try again. Either that, or take it to an LBS.

This is one of the most ridiculous examples of "advice" I've ever read regarding tire installation.

I have 4 tire levers, 2 of them are really thin that help me mount a tire, 1 that has a really really U shaped bezel that helps me grab beads really easily, and one that is longer and fatter that helps me slip a really tight tire on at the edge.

Kool stop tire bead jack is the one the LBS uses so if you can get your hands on one of those +1

^^^ Great video! I've never tried the toe strap trick, very clever.

It has worked for me many times. Before I start pumping I of course make sure that the tube is not pinched between the rim and the tire. The OP's tire is 28. Naturally, if you are using a larger tire you will need less air pressure.

Does OP mean he can't get both sides of the tire to the inside of the rim, or that he can't get the bead to seat? Those are two totally different things.

I broke two sets of Pedro's levers mounting a set of Rando's on my bike a few years ago, my thumbs still hurt from it. I went to the LBS and bought a set of Bontrager levers which feel almost like a really hard plastic but won't damage the rim. I have yet to find a tire I can't mount or remove with these. What you need is leverage so get the longest one you can find to help until you become a man and start growing muscles! I keed I keed!

Things you can try, that may or may not work:
-liquid soap on the rim
-bigger/better lever
-run tire through clothes dryer to soften it

If you're using the blue nylon one's from park tool; those are weaklings; I've killed a whole bunch of them.... you need levers with steel core inserts for the added strength and leverage; pedro's are a good choice.

Tire leavers are for women and communists, men use their brain and muscles.

Follow the Sheldon Brown instructions, and it's a no go, do Finger push-ups until you can.

Pedro's tire levers are good, but are 100% plastic, but if you break em they'll warranty them.
