Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

DeFREDifying your bike with cooler water bottle cages

Swapped out the el-cheapo stock water botter cages on my Giant Defy3 with Specialized RibCages.

Seemed to deFredify the bike instantly. Not bad for $35.

How does this defredify your bike? Are you a pro? Do you really need to save 5 grams?

Where's the pics? Thread is pointless. I swear there are less pics posted on this forum than any I've ever been on.

At least your episode of pointless gear procurement only set you back $35. My forays into self-delusion are far pricier.

Don't let the curmudgeons on BF ruin your spirits, hhnngg1.

Rib Cage's look great.

All of my bikes have only had Rib Cages. I have now despaired of any hope of defredifying them.

There are two ways to deFredify a bike.

1. get the handlebars below the seat
2. get the ****ing fred off the bike

It's not about the weight. They could weigh 50g more and I'd still like them.

It's ALL about the looks. I'm not even carrying much extra fat, but I couldn't care less about 'grams' - let alone 2-3 pounds of bike weight. (I'll care if it's 7-8, though.)

I think all the deluded BFers who think they're making improvements with their miniscule aero gains and weenie weight moves are wasting their money. I may one day get deep dish aero wheels, but it will mainly be for looks - the 40 seconds on a 60min TT it'll save me is a pointless reason for me to drop $2k.

Im a Fred for sure then. My bottle cages are all the $3 sort from China... I buy them to match the color scheme of my bike.

Maybe that makes me a Fred Wilma.

I didn't know cheap cages make a fred. Also, I thought that bike came stock without any cages at all.

To my surprise, the Giant Defy3 that I bought on sale for $650 at an LBS came with el-cheapo water bottle cages. I actually was not expecting that, but there they were. (They probably charged me the $5 extra for them - I wouldn't notice with the bill of the bike.)

I hate the word Fred. It is such an ambiguous word and people say it without knowing what it means.

You are all Freds for using the word Fred. Stupid freaking Freds.

Yep. I believe a better word is "poser" or "profiler" for the riders who get gear more for form than function.

You said that like it's a bad thing. And that's "poseur" to you.
