Odd Ebay Selling Strategy
I came across this bike part for sale with this in the description:
".. The starting price on my auctions is the lowest price - if I don't receive bids - I may raise the price. This discourages sniping. If you want this item at a bargain price I suggest you bid early. After 3 listings I retire the item). ...."
The seller doesn't want snipers. Seems strange. A bidder is a bidder. What is he thinking ?

I don't think it's against the rules. Just seems he's hurting himself by trying to cut out snipers.
I don't understand the logic.

out walking the earth
Seems like it's pressure BS. "This is my very best price, but by it now because the price goes up tomorrow....don't lose out!!!"

Personally, when I'm selling, I hope for snipers to raise the price.

".. The starting price on my auctions is the lowest price"
Setting a starting price at the mimimum you want for the item discourages bidding.
" - if I don't receive bids "
With a high starting price, seller won't get bids.
"- I may raise the price."
Which further discourages bidding.
"This discourages sniping."
No it doesn't. Snipers know what we want to pay and will snipe at that price or ignore the auction. Playing silly games with the price won't change that.
" If you want this item at a bargain price I suggest you bid early."
If the seller thinks it's such a bargain, quit fooling around and set it as a BIN and have it over with.
" After 3 listings I retire the item). ...."
Good riddance. I don't think I'd want to deal with this seller.
What the seller fails to understand is that getting a good price comes from getting competing bidders interested in the item.

It's not so much the snipers that raise the price as it is the n00bs who bid early and often. Seller is hoping to get lots of those, but n00bs are drawn in by the promise of a bargain, not weasely pricing games.

Just bid what you think the item is worth and go to bed.

Additionally, most serious buyers (or perhaps I should say experienced ebay buyers) would stay away from this listing because any small issue looks like it would turn into a big hassle with the seller.

The seller in the OP wouldn't see any business from me, I'm not sure what he or she is thinking.

Sworks aluminum frame for $135, Easton SLX fork for $75, Centaur square taper crank for $40, 105 rear derailleur for $35, Ultegra shifters for $110. I could go on, but how are any of those not deals?

Yes, the guy is a kook. I asked him about it, wondering why, and he reported me to Ebay as harrassing him and blocked me as a bidder (not that I actually wanted to buy the thing)

I pretend that I'm not interested and then bid the maximum I'm willing to pay at the last possible second. This has always worked for me. I don't understand why anyone would bid before the last minute. It just gets the competition all excited.
You can still get good deals on Ebay, but it's gotta be something few other people are interested in. I just got a pair of Sidi Hydro GTX shoes for less than $150 with less than 100 miles on them. Mint condition. Apparently there aren't many other cyclists my size right now in the market for a pair. I agree that for items with great popular appeal, you'll pay close to retail, if not a bit more, on the 'Bay.

Descends like a rock
Sounds like the seller is still angry about something he was trying to buy getting sniped or the price going up last minute.

Ebay will do something about it. That is the funniest thing I have read all year.
An Ebay seller threatened to track me down and beat me up(implied worse but never said it) over a part that the USPS lost. I complained and guess what, he is still selling on scambay.

I liked the eBay seller that had hot chicks posing with his bikes. I wonder if he actually sold bikes.

It's amazing what some people will pay for some things.
