Madison Bike Swap 1/14/12
Anyone planning to head to the Madison swap in about 4 weeks.
Although I love going and buying, I have way to much stuff and I will be setting up a couple of tables this year.

Hi folks, long time away! Thought I would check back in with BF C&V since I figured there would be a thread about this.
I always want to make it to this swap if I can. I hope to again this year, but still working on getting backup coverage for the family's needs.

There is a fairly big one here the following weekend, in the suburbs but a lot shorter drive. Still...maybe.

There's another in the city here in February ('Bike Winter' as opposed to the 'Winter Bike Swap' in the suburbs) but smaller and with less vintage stuff, more of a general event for urban cyclists than a swap meet. Still fun, and I got a pair of 600 levers there two years ago for $8.

The spousal unit scored a nice pair of flip-flops there last year to replace the half a pair she lost when we were kayaking. Me, not much.

^ ^That Steadicam rig gets a big 'WTF?' from me. It's a bizarre mismatch of a mid level Steadicam with a lightweight Canon DSLR. And the microphone on top of the camera (for the worst possible sound quality) along with a stupid windscreen that looks like a skinned hamster...can't imagine what the result is supposed to be.
^Well, sherilinn, you may have heard terrible stories about certain 'swap' parties back in the bad old 70s. Keys in a bowl, etc. Bike swaps are kind of like that. Everyone puts their bike into a big room like a gym, then we all step outside and put on masks...
Okay, it's not really like that. Really it is a bunch of bike nerds looking for bargains and unrecognized treasures, and going through a lot of dross in the process.

The bicycle expo and swap meet near St.Louis will at the Gateway Center, Collinsville Il. Sunday, Jan. 29 2012. 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. I read that a classic bike show will be featured at the expo.

I took 3 bikes to sell, too. Sold before I got them out of the car. The hawks were circling the parking lot. Of course, they ended up inside the swap meet, doubled in price, but I didn't care a whit, not my business. They sold there, too.

My first one, I expected to "swap." Not so. It was vendors selling, swapping parts for money. I felt like a fool, walking around with a bag over my shoulder, full of parts I expected to swap. Then, I stumbled upon sykerocker and Poguemahone chatting at a table. They'd split the cost of a booth (table) and were trying to generate the funds for a nice dinner meal. Like typical C&V folks who spot a crank arm poking out of a bag, Pogue asked "what's in the bag?" and I ended up leaving with his parts, faith restored, and he with mine. I should have bought his Black Lightning, but that's water under the bridge.

I sold two bicycles in the lot last year at the Blaine swap, and one inside.
They weren't resold at the swap, but they were on CL within hours.
The sellers noted their "pristine" condition and they noted the bikes had been rebuilt/updated.
By my kids actually.

Anyone else going? It's looking like Chicago Al and I will probably be heading up for the morning. Anyone want to meet up with us?
