"It is with great sorrow that Shaun Moulton and The Moulton Bicycle Company announce the news that Dr. Alexander Eric Moulton CBE, distinguished engineer and inventor, passed away peacefully in the company of his family and staff on Sunday evening, 9th December 2012, at the age of 92.
Dr. Moulton was an inspiration for generations of engineers, designers and inventors."
A truly great ideas man willing to think out of the box.
Time to take my TSR30 out for a spin in his honour.

The year 2012 will be remembered as a time when the world lost many great personalities, though mainly from the entertainment arts. Doctor Alex Moulton however will be fondly remember by those of us who have an appreciation for those rare folks who indeed were able to think outside the box. May his creativity carry forward for now on.

I was lucky enough to ride with Alex Moulton in San Francisco I think over a decade ago. He graciously joined the loosely organized folding bike ride back then. The meeting place was on Moulton St. close to Lombard. I still have the Bicycling Magazine issue which featured his AM bikes. That was my inspiration to build bikes with small wheels. Thank you Alex !! I rode my road bike with a Softride beam and 20" wheels that day. I still remember him walking around the bike with arms behind his back.

How sad! I hope this doesn't bring about the end of the Moulton bike. Maybe someone can continue the development. One thing is certain, he made the most incredible looking bikes in production. This guy I used to ride with, had a SpaceFrame that was the best looking bicycle I've ever seen. Pictures don't do justice to that bike at all. Danny also passed away this year from cancer.

I think Shaun Moulton will continue the BOA operation. I met the man about two years ago. As stated elsewhere at 92 he had a great innings and left us with a wonderful legacy. I have two of his bikes a Raleigh Moulton MK3 from the 70s and a more recent TSR2 belt driven affair.

The AM series debuted around the time the patents on the original F-frame bikes expired, and the New Series bikes came out just as the patents were about to expire on the AMs. I wonder what he was working on for the future?

I had a Moulton 4-Speed for 40 years (1964-2004). It is the reason for my strong preference for small-wheeled bicycles.
